Barbara Lynn MacDonald
(Nee Hummel)
1954 – 2010
"With one silent Canadian J - stroke Barb has propelled her canoe away from the shore and is paddling of on her next journey guided by another hand."
Barb left us on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Baycrest Hospital after a 9 month battle with abdominal cancer. She leaves Ross her loving husband and devoted partner in her outdoor loves and "her boys" Jamie, Scott and Jeffrey, to whom she imparted her love for all things natural. She will be lovingly remembered by her mom and dad Kay and Bill Hummel of Markdale, brothers Rick (Kim), Barrie (Lisa) and sister Sandy Boghossian (Mike). mother in law Fran MacDonald and Ross's brothers David (Kim Dow), Jim (Linda), John (Marcia) and Bob Grant.
We are indebted to Dr. E. Venier Barb's Family Physician for her advocacy and support during Barb's illness and words can not describe the level of care that Barb received from Princess Margaret Hospital and Dr. H. MacKay, Dr. E. Kennedy, Dr. J. Murphy the Chemotherapy team and the doctors and nurses on the Palliative Care floor. Barb spent her last weeks in the care of the palliative team at Baycrest Hospital and we thank them for their compassion and care of Barb.
This was a tough fight for Barb, but the support from her colleagues in the O.T. dep't at Sick Kids, Ross's Crescent School community, friends, and neighbours made it easier.
A Celebration of her Life will be held at Fairlawn United Church (5 blocks North of Lawrence Ave. west of Yonge St.) on Monday June 7th, 2010 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Princess Margaret Foundation.
On line condolences may be made at www.trullfunerals.yonge.com.

I'm rather late here, but was talking about what a huge impact Barb MacDonald had on my son's life. She worked with him when he was 4, teaching, among other things, how to kick and throw a ball. He went on to become ball sports obsessed, playing on many teams in school.
I used to come to the clinic at Sick Kids with my 1.5 year old daughter and sometimes Barb would let her try some of the things her brother did. Now she's thinking she'd like to be a pediatric OT.
There are not many people whose names would stick with me 20 years later! Barb was special.

To the MacDonald Family,
My deepest condolences to your family on the untimely passing of Barbara. I took both my daughters to Barbara over 15 years ago for therapy at Sick Kids and she had a huge impact on both my daughters and myself. She had a special way about her and I have the fondest memories of our times together. I was shocked to read of her passing and I am so sorry.

I am a parent of a child who attended Zareinu. My son benefitted greatly from having Barb as his OT. Barb had a very special touch and a magical way about her. The children always responded so well to her. I am truly sorry for your loss. I hope it brings your family some comfort to know what a significant impact she had on the children, parents and staff at Zareinu.

Dear Ross, Jamie, Scott and Jeffery:
It was an honor for me to be at Barb’s memorial service yesterday and I felt very privileged to be there with my OT colleagues and friends. When I arrived I was presented with a chain with a small canoe dangling from it. We all wore this chain with the small canoe to remember Barb and bond us together. I will continue to wear this small canoe to remember the transformational talents of Barb the OT and the balance she orchestrated in her life as a wife and mother.
My thoughts are with you during this impossible time.

Dear Jamie and Family,
Nicky Brookes from Physio told me on the Monday, May 31st, that Barb had passed away the day before. Barb was a "nodding acquaintance", her office being just down the hall from mine. While working in a hospital, one is exposed and made familiar with the ebbs and flows of life. But one never gets used to, all of a sudden, not seeing a familair face anymore.
Barb forwarded me the obituary on the 31st and I tried to imagine the sense of loss that the your family is going through. The lines in the obit brimmed with memories of births, gatherings, trips, loss, and all the multitudes of happenings that a lifetime of family means.
I had no idea that the "Jamie" in the "three boys" was you! I just learned about it this morning when Mary was talking to Elizabeth (Laura's mom). Of course, Mary didn't know I knew your mother.
Our thoughts are with you and your family. Take care,
Dodge and Mary Baena

Dear Ross, Jamie, Scott, and Jeff,
At the desk that Barb and I shared in the solarium at SickKids, we spent many hours comparing notes. Over the years we analyzed details of our families’ lives, providing each other with ideas, support and many many laughs. And some tears. Travel was our passion. Teaching in Trinidad together was a high point. I miss her terribly. The tribute you paid Barb at the memorial yesterday was outstanding. My thoughts are with you and your boys. We were shocked and saddened to learn of the loss of Barb. In 1966 -1967 at Courtland Av Senior Public School Kitchener (Grade 7), Barb and I were classmates..(Beside each other in our yearbook class photo).
On several occasions, Barb comforted me with kind supportive words…I’ll always remember that. Barb was clearly destined to be a leader.
“Neat” was a cool word to use in 1966. In our School Yearbook commenting about the school, Barb wrote “Teachers are Neat”. I wrote “Neat gym and art room”. I think Barb was a pretty “Neat”, kind, wonderful person, a volleyball and basketball star player. This is how we will remember Barb. Barb signed my Yearbook in 1967 and I will treasure it.

Dear Ross and boys,
Although we have not met, Barb shared lots of stories and pictures of her family and I know how much she loved all of you. At Zareinu, Barb brought her sparkle and expertise to our Infant Program team for many, many years. We always joked that we would still be there when we were too old to get up and down off the floor. I was shocked to read Barb's obituary in today's paper. This world has lost a kind and gentle soul, who loved - and lived - life. I know she will continue to live on through all those she touched, family, firends and colleagues. I first met Barb at Western in 1976 and a decade later she became my inspiration and mentor at Sick Kids. She had magic hands, a wealth of knowledge and acted on her dreams to see "her kiddies" live lives outside a therapy room. The picture caputres her smile and spirit to perfection. Ross and boys, I pray you will be comforted by the knowledge that Barb is now at peace and that her light now shines bright upon another shore.

Ross, Jamie, Scott and Jeff and all the family,
We are so sad to hear of Barb's passing. Our family will always remember her for that beautiful smile, her genuine approach to life and the fun we had on the river so many years ago. I so much enjoyed visiting with her at the MacDonald family get togethers and meeting the boys. She was so proud of you.
We know that your memories will be a wonderful way to cope as the time passes. Please accept our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Cindy Allen Davis, and Debbie Allen from the CinDeb.
