Douglas Brushell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 4, 2012.

Doug Brushell, 57, of Clay, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Doug was a devoted husband and father, yet his greatest title was "papa" to his six grandchildren. In the Late 1970's Doug was part of the Syracuse music scene. He was involved in the management team of the Todd Hobin Band and was a performer himself. In the mid- 1980's he turned his life to Christ and directed his passion for music to the Kingdom of God. He then founded a company called HIS ministries, where he worked with many national Christian artists. All of this work led to his co-founding of Kingdom Bound ministries. Doug was on staff at Believer's Chapel Cicero as a worship leader and singles pastor. He then took a brief sabbatical from pastor ship to further his ministry and attend Portland Bile Collage, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. After returning, he founded Believer's Chapel of Canastota, where he was senior pastor until his passing.
"I'm just and old rock and roller saved by grace."
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, the former Marie Alsever, his daughter; Katrina (Fred) Koenig, of Chittenango, 2 sons; Jason (Rebecca), of Clay and Collin (Heather), of Chittenango, 6 grandchildren; his #1 granddaughter, Alicia, Carter, Natalie, Emma, Sophia and Ryder, 3 sisters; Sandy Couch, Linda (David) Felix and Kitty (Bachand) Guzman, 2 brothers; Jimmy (Joyce) Barber and Gareth (Dee) Wood, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 2 pm Sunday July 22nd at Believers Chapel Cicero, 7912 Thompson Rd., Cicero, NY 13039. BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, Solvay, has care of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Believers Chapel Canastota, 2657 Seneca Trnpk., Canastota, NY 13032.

Oh my, How Doug's love for Jesus penetrated every second of his life and he shared is with everyone! Praise GOD! Marie, your Doug married my precious son - Chris to his beautiful wife Sue - 18 years ago. That is when I met you both, and you have been precious to us ever since. Doug even came to visit my Mom - in the hospital in March, after she had suffered a stroke. He was a Pastor to all and a walking 'fragrance' of our heavenly Father. Pastor, Friend, and bestest boss I have ever worked for. You showed me how to love unconditionally and that next to God, my family comes first. I will spend my remaining days on earth trying to live up to the legacy that you have left behind. Although we are brokenhearted, I know that we will see you again in heaven. Until then, warm up the band and keep rockin' in the Father's house!

Marie,
There is no question in my mind, that when Pastor Doug entered Heaven, he was greeted by the Lord saying, welcome home, my good & faithful servant.
To know Pastor Doug was to know the Lord;for He is love.I thank God for Pastor Doug; he greatly blessed me as a new believer at Believer's Chapel many years ago. I am grateful that I was able to see him and personally thank him.

I pray for God's grace to be with you during this difficult time. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Marie and Family:

I'm so sorry for your loss. and I wish I had been able to come visit more. Doug was a great guy and Pastor! After moving away from the Syracuse area in 1994, I didn't do so well to stay in touch over the years with him (or others) until more recently on facebook, but the memories and positive impact on my life and heart of those I met during my time there in New York, were never forgotten. I met Doug when I was going to Believers Chapel. I said to him, “I heard you are the Single's Pastor? Well, I'm single and I need a pastor.” I'm so grateful I got to know him and for the appointments we had! Not only was he very helpful and caring, but he was also fun. Just last week I was reminded of how he graciously and patiently waited for me one time (with a couple of calls from me via pay phones along the way reporting my delay and ETA) to bike from B'Ville to Cicero for an appointment. My car was being repaired and I decided a biking adventure would be fun. However, I underestimated the distance and biking speed, so it took way longer than I thought it would, but he still waited for me. And my favorite memory with Doug, and probably the most unique pastor appointment I've ever had so far, was right before I left (at my advanced request), where we just had a time of worship to the King of Kings -- he played his guitar and we both sang.

I pray that God's tangible presence of peace, strength, rest and grace will be with you and surround you.

Dave and I were so welcomed when we started attending Believer's Chapel @1987. Doug led an early morning service. His music and cheerful countenance lifted all of the us worshipers in praise. Later we took a class on prayer with Doug based on the Bill Hybels book- Too Busy Not to Pray. It was my pleasure to teach Colin and Jason at FHS in early music classes. Marie, your sweet spirit will always be in my memory- may the Lord continue to comfort you in this great loss. Doug Brushell was greatly used of the Lord!!! We will keep your whole family in prayer.

It's no small comfort to remember that the Apostle Paul told us, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Though we miss Brother Doug now, we have the confidence as Christians that he is enjoying his glorified body right now, and that we'll get to hug him in our own some day soon. How great is that?! Doug, you were a Christian gentleman that I was proud to know on Earth.

To the Brushell family and all of our brothers and sisters at Believers' Chapel, know that our loss is heaven's gain. My fellow laborer for the Lord, Pastor Doug, has left us with a wonderful legacy that we might follow in his steps. May we honor his memory by living our lives fully to the glory of God, that in due season we too will hear our Master say, "Well done, good and faithful servant...enter into the joy of your Lord" (Matthew 25:21).

Katrina,
The only time I ever met your father was in March at my niece Amie's funeral, but the memory will last me a lifetime.
About 2 minutes into this service I knew why he had been hand picked by Amie, to speak about her and for her when she could not
Your father could present the Lord to a room full of diversified friends, family and acquaintances with the ease, grace and true sincerity God gives to only a Chosen few.
Thru Pastor Doug's words, stories, scripture and antidotes he took an auditorium filled with heart broken, shell shocked people and patiently taught them.. Exactly what Amie and The Lord wanted them to know!
Life is a GIFT. Life is best lived in service to others, the true joy's are not found in the stuff we gather, it is the people who matter
As my heart found peace thru his words, I could not help but feel myself say You are right Amie
Pastor Doug is the REAL DEAL.
My prayers are with you and your family Katrina your Father was a remarkable man

There was NOTHING like worshipping the Lord with Doug! He was one in a million and I was blessed to have him in my life as a new Christian, as a single-adult, as a struggling "newly married", as a Pastor who performed my wedding, at the time of death of my son, and so on and so on.....

July 9, 2012

Family of Doug Brushell,
It was our privilege to meet Doug in ministry opportunities at Liverpool Christian Church. I think that we were with Doug in Family Camp at Mountainview Camp and in services at Liverpool Christian. We often heard Chip Wood talk about his brother, Doug. At the time of Chip's death I was serving as Pastor of LCC and worked with Doug in conducting Chip's funeral. Sorry to hear of his death, on your behalf. However, I think that Doug had prepared for this time and will be at home with the Lord. .Rev. 1413 says, "Then I heard a voice from heaven say, 'Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.' "Yes says the Spirit, they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will flollow them.'"

It saddens me to hear of the passing of Doug. We had bonded in our early teen years and attended the same HS. Tho our paths took different turns in adulthood, and many years and miles had seperated us, I felt we continued to share a friendship. My thoughts and prayers to his family in this most heart felt time.

Pastor, Brother-in-Law, Mentor, Role Model, "Uncle Doug" to our grandchildren, my Friend. You led me to Christ, taught me how to forgive, showed me how to be a better husband and father. I'll miss your jokes, our trips together, how you never missed an chance to minister to people. I know your "rocking" at the feet of God, there is a new lead guitar in Christ's worship team. I miss you big guy and I'll see you there. I'll bring the dice.

Katrina - Thinking of you and your family. I watched how inspiring and present your father was to Eric and Amie in their time of need. When it came time for Amie's service, your father wanted to honor her with such integrity and grace. I only met him twice. In those two times, I saw a man of character and honor. So sorry for your loss.Gather your wonderful memories and hold them close to your heart. Much peace, Clare Murray Volo

Doug has been a good friend since I was in high school and booking HIS Band for an outreach gig back in the late 80's. He ALWAYS had the time for me and for anyone who was in need. Doug was the true personification of the love of Jesus. Never a word of judgement or condemnation--just love. I will miss him greatly but CANNOT wait for the Kingdom to come and we will all be together-friends and family jammin' to the Saviour's love for eternity. Thank you Doug for your friendship and love. I pray now that your legacy will continue through your beautiful family. Much love, hugs and prayers to them all as they go through this time of loss and sorrow.

Doug, you were a friend first and foremost. You had a heart to serve selflessly, the ability to guide with out judging, and an absolute joy and passion for music. You went through more trials than one man ever should, and still came through with a smile. You left a legacy to be proud of, and we all are better for having known you, but sadder that you have left. Keep on rocking, my friend.
