Ella Jean Dockery was born to Eugene Raines and Maude Ella Hurd in Lebanon, Tennessee on May 6th 1940. She was the oldest child born to Maude Ella Hurd and Eugene Raines. Ella departed this Life on Wednesday February 3, 2010 after fighting an ongoing sickness. Ella was raised in Waukegan, Illinois and graduated from East Campus High school. In 1972 Ella moved to Portland with her three daughters and husband Fred Pankey.
Ella Jean was a hard worker and dedicated employee, and began working for Multnomah County in 1976 with her start being in the Hoover detox center then she worked at the Southeast Health center until retirement in 1998.
Ella enjoyed spending time with all of her family and friends, and was the glue that held her family together. She was most often the host of holiday functions where she would spend hours in the kitchen preparing her delicious cooking. She was always proud of her genes and often bragged about "not making any ugly children". Ella Jean wore many hats in her lifetime, she was most widely known as Grandma, even to neighborhood friends, but just as easily played the roles of mother, father, friend, confidant, When Ella Jean was not at work or with her family she took part in gambling and traveling. Her games of choice were bingo and dominoes, her travels almost always consisted of a casino in route.
Ella was preceded in death by her mother Maude Ella Alexander; father Eugene Raines; step father Willie Alexander; sister Willie Francis Daniels and two daughters Crystal and Dianna Pankey.
Ella will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Daughters Cynthia Pankey, and Joyce Pankey of Portland, Oregon, sisters: Anita Faye Hanserd, Deborah Elizabeth Gammage, brothers: William, Sherman, and Bobby Raines, all of Nashville Tennessee. 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews.
