.Frances Bramhall (Sandy) King, a resident of the town of Sherborn for 64 years, died of gastrointestinal cancer in the comfort of her home on August 2. She was 89 and would have turned 90 next month.
Mrs. King was married for 65 years to Franklin King Jr., who died in 2005. They raised five children in their 1780 farmhouse and through the years they also nurtured horses, cattle, goats, pigs, sheep, chickens, dogs and cats on their small farm.
A lover of nature and the outdoors, Mrs. King relished working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and liked nothing better than to produce fresh food for the dinner table and fresh-cut flowers to beautify her home. She also was a talented horsewoman, a tennis player, a duck hunter, a fisherman, an enthusiastic traveler and an accomplished chef and hostess. She kept doing many of these activities well into her eighties.
Outside of home, Mrs. King had had an extraordinary network of friends and admirers in the Sherborn community and beyond. An avid reader, she was a trustee of the Sherborn Library and a volunteer there for more than 25 years.
Born in New Jersey on Sept. 28, 1922, Mrs. King grew up with five siblings in Morristown, NJ. She graduated from the Westover School in Connecticut and was the class secretary for many years.
She is survived by her five children: Louise K. Cook and her husband Warren of Kingfield, ME; Franklin King III and his wife Margaret Pantridge of Needham, MA; Dorothy K. Whittemore and her husband Henry of Readfield, ME; Philip C. King and his wife Patsy of Southport, CT; and Margaret M. King and her husband Steven McFarland of Huntsville, Utah. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Nina, Bunge, Franklin, Natty, Katie, Sam, Philip and Lucy; two great-grandchildren, Birken and Anders, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. King's children would like to express gratitude to friends and neighbors for the love and support they gave their mother.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday August 11 at 11 am at Saint Dunstan's Church, 18 Springdale Ave., Dover, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Sherborn Library, 4 Sanger St., Sherborn, MA 01770.

Dear Nick and Margaret,
We were all so sorry to hear that your mother passed away so recently. She sounds like a woman after my own heart, with 5 children and a small farm. I can just begin to imagine how much fun she had over the years with it all.
We all send our very sincerest sympathies to you and all your family.
With all our love, Barbie, Reg, Phil, Chris, John, Francie and Christie

To the family of Sandy King,
I was so saddened to hear of your mom's passing. I have known her for so long and feel fortunate to have done so. She was a remarkable. likable woman whose smile was infectious. If not at Salon Paradiso getting our hair done by Tony or swapping stories at Windy-Lo Nursery, talking books or gardening was always our mission.
Please accept my, and Windy-Lo's, deepest sympathy.

Darcy, I remember well one of my first visits, at your home, with Sandy- I almost allowed her to back into a ditch! Her response- a smile for not actually having done it- endeared her to me forever. She seemed to take life in stride, welcoming visitors, and enjoying conversations on food, books and family. My thoughts were with you as you celebrated her life and now as you adjust to life without her.

The Kings have been a pillar of the community and neighborhood for as long as I have lived in Sherborn. As I reflect, I realize that Sandy was about my current age when I moved in 32 years ago. Both Sandy and Bunge were open and welocming in embracing us. They were my first introduction to living in a community where the names of friends would be
Bunge,Punky,Muffy,Poppy,Bink etc..
Many of the plants on my property are a permanent reminder of her generousity of sharing as she divided her perennials. I earned the distictive status of longest egg client in the neighborhood. I am flooded with funny and touching stories that will always be with me. Yesterday's trubute to her life was spot on perfectly fitting, filled with insite, joy and respect for the natural world and the process of life as it unfolds.
Thank you for sharing your mom, Sara

I am so sorry for your loss. Sandy touched so many people's lives and I am blessed to have been her friend. She was always wonderful to me and my children, taking Glenn riding, giving me fresh eggs, fixing me lunch with the most incredible iced tea, tolerating my tennis game, etc. Most importantly she listened and understood. Incredibly, we knew each other for years before discovering that Bunge and my dad wre business associates. One day dad came with me to pick up the eggs and Bunge happened to be in the yard. What a surprise meeting that was! Sandy and Bunge will remain in my heart and my thoughts and prayers always. The last time I saw Sandy was most fittingly on the tennis court last fall. We had met at the Wimbledon 109 tennis courts thirty years ago. God bless.

I was fortunate to meet Sandy on one of her early visits to Freeman Ridge Farm, in Kingfield. She always, went out of her way to make you feel welcome. Her love for animals was very evident, and often times they would be the center of our conservations. She was a very common person that took the time to share her thought's, and she always left me with the feeling that she cared about what was on your mind. The world would be a better place with more people like her. Bill Gilmore

I have so many great memories of teaching both Darcy and Meg. I loved coming to your house and visiting with Sandy who I've always thought was the best Mom a horse crazed kid could have. The last time I went to visit Sandy (last year) she was off playing tennis and I will always remember that she was off playing tennis at 88 Now that's a great life!

Sam, Jane, frank, Jack and Kay Plimpton send our love and condolences to the Kings. Sandy and Bunge were great friends of Kay and John on Sherborn. Sandy was a great doubles partner in tennis, and always game. Kay is with us in Maine, and if she were capable we know she would want to honor her dear friend Sandy in person. All our best- the Plimptons

Aunt Sandy has been a beautiful, energetic, loving presence for our family. We loved stopping off to see her on our way home to Morristown, tagging along as she fed the chickens or helping her with the garden. Her interest in family never faltered and when we couldnt visit, we'd have long telephone conversations. She led a full life and was valued by all, both family and larger community. She will be greatly missed but not forgotten,
Love, Frannie Bramhall Wittgens (niece and goddaughter)

My few visits with your lovely mother are so memorable. She visited our home in Readfield and was so complimentary and natural. She had a peacefulness and sense of well being about her that I will never forget. I really enjoyed her love of nature, love of good, healthy food and her fondness for her family and anyone who knew you all. She will be so missed! I am confident that the memories you have of being with her will sustain you forever and help get you through the tough days ahead. Love always, Wendy Flaschner - Readfield
