Jeffrey Scott Thomas was born the last child to Roland Faye Thomas Sr. and Marylyn Leticia Davis on May 27, 1961 in Rapid City, South Dakota. He was the baby brother to his three siblings; Desiree Carter, Suzanne McGlothin, and Roland Thomas, Jr. Jeffrey is welcomed home by his mother, twin brothers, an uncle, his grandparents and his Father-in-Law. Jeffery has always been very proud of his roots. He was born into a deeply rooted family from Kentucky, Panama, Jamaica and Barbados. He always dreamed of traveling to Panama and Africa; he no longer has to wait because he can now fly.
Jeff graduated from Colonel White High School in Dayton, Ohio in 1979 where he developed his love for football as a football player for the Cougars. Everyone who knew him knows how much of a sports fanatic he was, even beyond football. If it is a competitive sport, you will find him watching it. Upon graduating from high school, Jeffrey attended Clark Atlanta University where he worked towards a degree in Public Relations.
Jeff's first job after leaving college was working for a hotel restaurant in Washington, D.C., The Washington, Vista Hotel, where he developed his love and expertise in the culinary arts. After 25 years in the industry, he decided it was time to do something different and transitioned careers to working as an Assistant Fire Marshal, for the Fairfax County Fire Marshal's office in Fairfax, Virginia. After moving to Austin, Texas in October of 2011, he began working for the City of Austin, in the Code Compliance Office.
Jeffrey loved people and loved to talk. When he was with family, he made sure everyone stayed awake talking until all of his questions were answered. He would always say “I have a question” and that would spark more conversation. He was always the life of the party anywhere he went and knew how to keep it going.
Jeffrey was very devoted to his careers and was dedicated to capturing the attention of those that he worked with through his extended knowledge of any given subject. People would say how does he know all that “stuff” they would say he was a walking encyclopedia. We often joked that he was “a plethora of useless information”. He always had a joke and knew how to make others feel more relaxed. Even during his brief hospital stays, he kept the nurses laughing. I am sure the nurses are missing his antics right now. He tried to be happy no matter what the situation was or where or what he might find himself in.
Jeffrey and his wife Meta loved to travel together and experience new foods during their travels. He also had a passion for cooking and experimenting with new recipes. Good food and good conversation and he was all good.
Jeffrey is survived by his lovely wife of 16 years, Meta Joy Henderson, his Mother-in-Law Gladys Henderson, who was his second Mom and worked effortlessly day and night to care for him during his illness. He also leaves behind a daughter Veronica Nunerley and two beautiful grandchildren, Kaelyn Nunerley and Kahli Curry to cherish his memory. PopPop, as he was affectionately called by the grandkids, will be truly missed by them all.
Jeffrey is also survived by close family members who considered him “The Black Superman”.
