John Fayler Hartwig, 85, of Great Falls, a Navy veteran and retired owner of John's Wheel Alignment, died of natural causes Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at a local nursing home.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2010, at Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home. His funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at the funeral home, with burial at Hillside Cemetery in Cascade.
John was born Augusut 13, 1924, in Long Beach, California. After graduating from Great Falls High School in 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy, working as a mechanical engineer and an electrical welder aboard the USS Genesee during World War II.
After leaving military service in February 1946, he attended body and fender school in Chicago, where he met and married Louise Eppley. In 1950, John bought a farm in Fort Shaw, where he farmed and raised three sons.
He married Sally Rounds Martin in 1964. John was a longtime resident of Fort Shaw until 1967, when he moved to Great Falls.
He opened John's Wheel Alignment, where he performed vehicle maintenance and alignment services. He retired in 1981, and moved to Cascade. Sally passed away in 1985.
John married Mary Meyers in August 1989. They moved to Great Falls in 1994, and lived on the West Side. Mary passed away in 2006.
Survivors include sons Russell Hartwig of Tucson, Arizona, Terry Hartwig of Great Falls, and Wayne Hartwig of San Diego; and stepchildren Gary Martin, Bill Martin, Kent Martin, Keith Martin, Richie Lucas, Dan Meyers and Leann Meyers.
