Leonard Biss Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 14, 2013.

Leonard Norman Biss, Jr., devoted husband of the late Gloria Biss, found peace in his home in St. Helena, CA on August 13, 2013. Leonard, a native of San Francisco, CA was born on January 10, 1933 to Leonard Norman Biss, Sr. and Margaret (McKenna) Biss. Leonard is survived by his two children, Leonard N. Biss III of Marin and Deena Biss Kurz of Lafayette, and five grandchildren, Hannah Biss, Leonard N. Biss IV, Kellen Biss of Marin, and Lauren Kurz and Jordan Kurz of Lafayette. Also survived by his brother Ken and his wife Judi Biss. Leonard is a graduate of Balboa High School Class of 1951, and went on to serve in the Navy. He was a true family man and valued nothing more than to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Leonard welcomed and embraced all who came into his life and was referred to by many as "dad". Leonard lead a very active life traveling the country with his beloved wife Gloria, enjoying all that life had to offer. He was one of the most positive and inspiring men that anyone would be lucky to come in contact with. He has touched many lives with his kindness and generosity and his light and love will live on within us until the end of time.

We will greatly miss our Dad and Papa for who he was and for all he did for us all. We love you and mom always.

Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday, August 20th, at Morrison Funeral Chapel in St. Helena from 4:00PM until 7:00PM. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service in Honor of Leonard's memory on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 11:00AM at Holy Cross Cemetery 2121 Spring St. Saint Helena, CA 94574. Len Biss lived his life to the fullest, and shared his love of this world with all he met . Never in doubt as to where he stood on an issue, Len had a talent in letting you see into his way of thinking, and appreciate its value.

Our contact with Len and Gloria was as "in-laws" of his son Len 3.With this entre' we enjoyed several holiday invitations yo their homes, several voyages on the boats, and eventful trips in the "vehicle". As consumate host and a classical California couple, we (staid New Englanders) were amazed with stoties of thier long distance motorcycle rides yogether ( his and hers bikes), and their shared enthusiasm for Len's passion of anything that was motorized.

Len brought "the vehicle" (including Ruff) to see us in Atlanta, Georgia, on the way to a Prevost rally at Hilto Head , and to Maine , where we joined their trip to Nova Scotia. Our travels in Len's litany of motorized items included water-based excursions on the Delta and on the bay. Always the effective Captain as well as the perfetc hoost , we will never forget these great excursions.

As US Navy sailors of a similer era and age,I enjoyed sharing sea stories with Len , and our personal backgrounds, but I never could match the adventures
( and success) of his fishing trips.

Len had that wonderful gift of sharing hios knowledge and enthusiam in all his interestswith his children, grandchildre and friends. His successas an entre[reneur and supporter of new ventures was a talent to be appreciated and admired.

Enough cannot be said in appreciation and memory of this amazing...

We met Len & Gloria at a Mercedes Abalone feast in Mendocino in 1994 and became great friends while we lived in Napa. After we moved to Port Townsend they would make a yearly visit in their Marathon. Len would always want the largest local crabs we could get for a feast in our courtyard, about 3 pounds each. These were great times for us and them. We will both miss them and wish them the peace in heaven.

We met Len and Gloria in 2006 when we bought across the street from them at the Desert Shores RV Park in Indio. We became great friends and considered them to be one of the highlights of our trips to the desert. We will truly miss them both and yet feel some comfort knowing that they are once again back together again. We love you Len & Gloria.

So sorry for your loss. Your mom and dad used to meet us at P.I.R. in Phoenix when I was racing. They made the best manhattans in that big motor coach. We always shared a lot of laughs together. Also used to see Len on Wed. mornings when my dad would give him a ride to work after Breakfast Club. Fond memories never to be forgotten. Tim Joyce (Joyce Bros Metalworks,S.F.)

Dear Len, Deena and Janet, My heart aches, and I miss my daily routine so much. Len was so kind to me, and I am forever changed by the time I had in his life. Your all so blessed and I am grateful that you have been so kind to share your loved ones with me. I will always remember the things that he taught me about how to be so kind, and always find the good in every situation. In this situation, the good is he is not ill any longer. I will miss the dogs so much. Janet making cookies, and Len checking up on what I am doing in my life. Thank you all again for your love and for sharing Len with me. I shall never take anything for granted. God is amazing for who he puts into our lives to help us learn, and to help us experience unconditional love. He showed me what a Father who loves would be like and I felt so loved by him. I am so sorry I only had him for a short time. Hugs to all of you, and may life be gentle to you in the weeks to come as you make a new chapter with out your Len.

Len and I had feen friends since high school (Balboa). Over the years we had reconnected on and off and I thoroughly enjoyed that friendship. Len often talked about his wife and family. He was a true family man. He had great integrity and it was an honor to know him. I would like to express my condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed.

Deena and Len, Both of your parents were so wonderful to Gary and to me! They came to us in a time of need when no one else believed in our dream to build our business. Their trust, respect, kindness, and loyalty were unparalleled and gave us the strength and stability to carry on and make our dreams come true for all of us. Your father was a genius in real estate and "the art of the deal". He was amazing!!! Your mother was a real gem (power behind the throne). I miss both of them terribly and know you find comfort in knowing that they are together again. My love to you all and hopes for healing to begin. Virginia

To Deena and Len and your families: Len was one of our closest friends. We met when we both joined the Golden gate Breakfast Club 40 years ago. Through that association our friendship grew with Len and Gloria. We spent many a summer on the Delta and enjoyed spending New Year's Eve together for the past 26 years--mostly at the Benbow Inn. We cherish the many memories we have of both Len and Gloria. Len was always a person I could count on for good advise when I was faced with a problem. He was a practical man, a gentleman and a good friend. He is missed by all of us here but he is with his beloved Gloria in the Heaven. Mike and Yvonne Hanlon

Deena, Len and families,

Offering my sincere condolences at this time of grief.

In the words of my favorite author, Anonymous:

Death is the scissors,
That cuts the cord,
And sets the soul free,
From a body,
That has become more a prison,
Than a palace.

Dad is without pain and has been set free.

Blessings and Peace be with your family. You continue in my prayers.

Len became a friend through the time I helped do the funeral for his sweetheart. We kept in touch after that time. Len was a surpising man. After hearing of the hard time we were having in getting financing for a house, Len offered to loan my wife and I the money to do so. Although we were able to make other arrangements, I will never forget that this "kind stranger" was willing to help out in such a big way. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Thanks for the example Len.

Len was my "Best Man" and we grew together sharing our family ups and downs through the years. We both enjoyed our frequent phone chats.
Len often said, through the years, "We are only here on a visit" and what a "visit" it was for him.
Len and Gloria, were our good friends and we pray that their next "visit", where ever it takes them, is as enjoyable.
