Robert E Cunningham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2019.

ROBERT E. (Bob) CUNNINGHAM
January 6, 1926-February 5, 2019
Robert E. (Bob) Cunningham completed his earthly journey at home on February 5, 2019. He was born on January 6, 1926 in Mechanicville, NY to parents Frank and Louise Cunningham. He attended Catholic school in Albany, NY and graduated from Christian Brothers Academy. Upon graduation he immediately joined the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Billy Sunday during World War 2. Upon returning to Albany he enrolled in Siena College, graduating with a degree in pre-med. Upon graduation he accepted a position with Allegheny Ludlum Steel Company (one of TIMET'S founders) in 1950 and in 1952 headed west to Henderson to begin his more than forty-year career with TIMET, where according to the HENDERSON HOME NEWS, September 12, 1952, he participated in casting the plant's first titanium ingot. Following in close order were promotions to acting, then shift foreman, in Melting. He worked as a Process Engineer, becoming Supervisor of Processing. He later retuned to the Melt Shop as Superintendent and became Ingot Plant Manager. He was then promoted to Manager, Plant Services. In that position he was responsible for everything that moved into or out of the Henderson plant except the people. Mr. "C" as he was known on the job, was very active in TIMET activities off the job as the unofficial Master of Ceremonies at various sporting events and banquets. His unique range of responsibilities and activities brought him into contact with more employees, suppliers, customers and just plain folks than any other Henderson personality.
At home he is "The Guv" (so named by a London cabbie). Bob had two families, his wife Trudy of over 60 years, children Mike and Susan and TIMET. He was devoted and committed to both. He was a genuine, caring and compassionate personality. Upon his retirement he and his son Michael launched Mike 1 Enterprises, a fruit bar and ice cream distributing business. They supplied frozen delights to all the marinas, hospitals and numerous other locations. In addition, he found time to reactivate his "mean" tennis game, read a book a day, travel and continue enjoying life with family and friends. Thanksgivings at the beach were special. He was the ultimate Nampong to his adoring grandchildren.
Bob lived an active, productive and exemplary life. He is survived by his wife, Trudy; his son Michael (Bernadette) Cunningham, daughter Susan (George) Berry. Grandchildren, Christopher Cunningham (Ariella), Nicholas Berry, and Taylor Berry. Great grandchild Obie Cunningham. Sister, Mary Ellen Kalled; Sister-in-law Shirley Cunningham, Albany, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Pete Cunningham (Jane), and John Cunningham.

Viewing will take place from 4 p.m. to 7p.m. at Palm Eastern Mortuary on Monday, February 11, 2019 at 7600 S Eastern Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89123. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 130 N Pecos Rd, Henderson, NV 89074. Trudy, Mike and Susan,
I'm so sorry to hear of Bob's passing I just found out today. I remember you said it so well, that your generation was the first to really move away from the family homes. You settled here in Vegas without family and your new friends, who also had moved, became your new families. I thank my mom frequently for the people like you and Bob that she brought into my life.

Growing up through the 70s without a dad was a bit awkward. Bob was one of the few men I looked upto, to see how to handle yourself as a man. He was loving, kind, patient, gentle, intelligent, wise and much more. But he was also very deep and solidly stood for what he believed, but could also understand your opinion if he didn't necessarily agree.

As time goes on, memories fade, stories change a bit, then they change some more. But what cannot change is the legacy Bob has left. Bob was a great man I will always remember and I grew into a better man for knowing him.

To the Cunningham family. I extend my heartfelt love and condolences to all of you.

There are simply not enough words to express my respect, admiration, and love for Bob.

As a young child and into adulthood he always welcomed me with that million dollar smile, a twinkle in both eyes, and a "hi sweets followed by a kiss on the check".

My fondest childhood memories include holidays, vacations and just dropping by to say "hello" with the Cunningham family.

I can truly say that it has been a gift and honor to have known Bob Cunningham, and to have been imparted with his kindness, love and outlook on life.

Trudy, Mike and Susan, You truly have my deepest sympathy. I don't know anyone that I admired more than Bob. He was a true gentleman. He was always considerate, congenial, grateful, very humorous and a good cook. I remember our "cruises" and the fun we had on the tennis court. Bob was a joy to be with. There is joy in heaven right now, as he returns home, from which he came, and is greeted by his parents and brothers.
