Alfonso Abundo, a resident of Kingsville, Texas, passed away July 5, 2010 with his loving family by his side. He was 85 years old. He was born January 23, 1925 in San Felipe, Zambales, Phillippines to Teodoro and Maria Abundo.
He retired from the United States Navy in 1967 after 21 years of service where he received several medals and commendations. Alfonso was a member of the Filipino American Association. His passion was cooking. He was a chef and worked at the Officer's Club at N.A.S. Kingsville. Alfonso also managed several restaurants. He enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. Alfonso was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Valentin Abundo and sister, Luisa Abundo. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Dolores Abundo; six children, Katherine (Billy) Saul of Kingsville, Texas, David Abundo of Pasadena, Texas, Helen (Craig) Small of Kingsville, Texas, Anita L. Abundo of Kingsville, Texas, Linda (Burt) Bull of Riviera, Texas and Alfonso (Evie) Abundo, Jr. of Pearland, Texas; sister, Helen (Larry) Abdon of Chula Vista, California. He leaves twelve beautiful grandchildren, Eric Saul, Erin Quillin, Michael Abundo, Jeremy Abundo, Chad Small, Dolori Small, Hope Small, Dillard Bull, Bryson Bull, Caeleb Abundo, Daniella Abundo and Zadaya Abundo; and four great-grandchildren, Cameron Saul, Carson Saul, Taylor Quillin, and Logan Small.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church; burial to follow at Chamberlain Cemetery with full military honors.

I was very impressed and touched by the eulogies given by Mr. Abundo's son-in-law and grandchildren at his funeral Mass today! We could tell he was a marvelous person who lived an outstanding life.
