A mushroom walks into a bar and says, "Bartender, drinks on me for everyone in the house." The bartender replies, "Why would you want to buy drinks for everyone, you're a mushroom." The mushroom replies, "Because I'm a fungi!" And Paul was a fun guy! He joined the angels and his wife Shirley on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, with hopes of filling heaven with joy and laughter.
Paul was born in White Plaines, New York, on December 27, 1920 to Maude (Kaiser) and John Boat. His family moved to Kellogg, Iowa, where he attended grade school and high school. He was president of his junior and senior class, captain of the baseball and basketball teams, and all state in baseball.
Paul attended Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa. While there, he had a tryout with the Saint Louis Browns baseball team, enlisted in the Army, and was called to active duty, so he was unable to attend spring training. The same year, he met the love of his life and favorite dance partner, Shirley Krome. They began their lives together in San Antonio, Texas, where they married on June 9, 1945. He graduated the same day from military police school as a second lieutenant. Paul served in the Army for four years.
After the service, Paul owned a grocery store in Des Moines, Iowa. His fifty-year sales career included selling for H.J. Heinz, Red Ball Jets, and Dunham's and Charm Step Shoes. During his career, he was awarded the Iowa Shoe Travelers Salesman of the Year and Florsheim's Corporate Salesman of the Year.
Paul was blessed with a great sense of humor and a positive attitude toward life. He was always eager to make new friends and had a good word to say about everyone. Paul was a caring and compassionate man.
He loved dancing, playing bridge and playing and watching sports. Paul was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He and Shirley enjoyed traveling in Europe and the United States. They were blessed with many lasting friendships as they moved from San Antonio to Slater, IA; De Moines, IA; Greenville, OH; St Louis, MO; Whitefish Bay, WI; Chicago, IL; Sacramento, CA; Grinnell, IA and Perrysburg, OH. Most of all, Paul enjoyed being with his family. He always loved seeing and being with "his girls" and their families.
Paul will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him: daughters Barbara (Jim) Wright, Catherine (Ron) Bernard, and Patricia Borek: grandchildren Tim (Stacey) Bernard, Tehra (John) Goetz, Katie (Nick) Marconi and Jonathan Bernard: and great-grandchildren Zachary Bernard, Riley, Ryan and Allyson Goetz, and Caroline and Colin Marconi; niece Kim (Maks) Patoni and their sons, Christopher (Chassidy) Curtis and Kary; nephew, Kevin (Dee) and their children, Stephanie and Tim.
His loving wife, Shirley, brother Gene, sister Marjorie, and grandson Chance preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 24, at the Witzler Shank Funeral Home in Perrysburg, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by the memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private, following the memorial service.
Special thanks to his bridge buddies, Nancy, Peg, and Don, the "Breakfast Club", and the residents and staff at Waterford Commons who made his life so great for the last two years. Also, special thanks to Paul's friend, Frank Slater, and the Lamplight Café gang.

Family of Paul Boat,
Sorry to hear of Paul's passing. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Will be out of town during the visitation but wanted you to know that I have been blessed to know him and share in his good humor. He was a "fungi".

Our Condolences from our family (Slater family) to yours. Your dad lived a full life with so many things that he did. How wonderful. Although I never met him, I know by what my brother said (Frank) that he was a nice guy, fun to be around and loved jokes. He experienced so many things in his life and thats a good thing, many people dont get to experience so much in ones life. I know he is happier being with his wife. Celebrate his life, and remember he is with the lord now.
