Marino da Ponte, age 49, of Fall River died January 7, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Maria (Almeida) da Ponte to whom he was married for the past 26 years.
Born in São Jorge, Azores, a son of Rosa (da Silveira) of Watonsville, California and the late Manuel da Ponte, he came to Fall River in 1985.
Mr. da Ponte worked in construction for D & R Paving until illness caused him to retire in 2012, and was a member of the International Laborers Union Local #22.
He was a member of the Alfonso Costa Republican Club and an avid fan of his beloved Sporting Soccer Club and a Grande Amigo das Festas do Divino Espirito Santo.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother: a son, Robert da Ponte of Fall River, two sisters: Rosa Azevedo and Dulce Bettencourt both of CA, mother-in-law: Maria Almeida of Fall River, brothers and sister-in-laws: Humberto, Manuel, Laudalino Almeida and Lubelia Botelho all of Fall River, two uncles: Luis da Ponte of Somerset and Francisco da Ponte of Fall River, thirteen nieces and nephews, three great nieces and nephews and many cousins.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 8 AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter St. Fall River followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in St. Michael Church, 189 Essex St., Fall River. Visiting hours Friday 5 -9 PM. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
