Richard Maulhardt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 8, 2009.

Richard Frank Maulhardt Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Dec. 3, 2009, at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard after a short illness.

Richard was born at St. John's Hospital on April 18, 1921 to Louis Godfrey and Theresa Clara Borchard Maulhardt. He was born and raised on land purchased by his grandfather, Jacob Maulhardt, in 1869 and continued to live on and farm that land all his life.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elizabeth, Marie and Alma; and brothers, Edward, Robert and John. Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ruth; by his sons, Richard Jr. (Janet), Lynn (Marsha), Dean (Toni); daughter, Donna Stiles (Gary); and son, Alan (Terry). He also leaves behind granddaughters, Pamela (Pierre), Ann (Mark), Stacy (Ben), Jennifer (Trevor), Jaime (Greg), Jessica (Brandon), Jaclyn (Scott) and Erica; and grandsons, Don, Brian, Terence (Lisa), A.J., and Sean, as well as great-granddaughters, Carly, Taylor, Delilah and Isabell, and great-grandsons, Nicholas, Christian, Luca, Isaac, Deegan, Cole, Caden, Noah and Joseph. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews will also miss him.

Richard actively participated in Ventura County Farm Bureau and California Farm Bureau Federation, constantly searching for new techniques to enhance and promote the growth of various crops and ensure the longevity of the family farm. Throughout his career he also served on the board of directors of Ojai Tapo Lemon Association, California Bean Growers Association, Diamond Walnut Association, Coastal Growers Association, Ventura County Museum, USO, and others. He was also a longtime member of Knights of Columbus, Council 750, and the Elks Club.

Richard and Ruth enjoyed traveling the world over and were fortunate to have visited over 150 countries across the seven continents. Richard traveled through the USSR in 1962 with several other California farmers at the invitation of the Governor of California. In 1975 he and Ruth, along with two other couples, spent six weeks in Pakistan as representatives of the American Farm Bureau; a tremendous learning experience for both the travelers and the Pakistani people. Richard and Ruth also enjoyed countless bridge games with their friends throughout their long marriage.

Through all his farming, traveling and activities with friends, Richard's number one priority was his family. He was a wonderful and caring husband and father who spent many, many hours with his daughter and four sons on the ranch. He also enjoyed many family trips with his children throughout the United States and Europe.

Following a private burial, a memorial mass for Richard Frank Maulhardt Sr. will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Santa Clara Catholic Church, with a reception to follow at Richard Maulhardt Ranch in Oxnard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a memorial donation to The Oxnard Farm Park Foundation, 961 Rice Ave., Oxnard, 93030, or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of James A. Reardon-Payton Mortuary in Oxnard.
