Sara Elizabeth Barber, age 98, a resident of Grace Heights, went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning February 2nd 2012. Sara was the daughter of the late Coan Guilford Barber and Addie May Morrow Barber born September 17, 1913 in Burke County. Sara was a longtime owner and operator of Barber's Grocery on Bethel Street in Morganton. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and enjoyed working with children and missions. Sara stated," I enjoyed serving my Lord, and working for Him." Sara was a kind, caring person and will be greatly missed.
Along with her parents, Sara is preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl Ross Mabe, Florence Fine, Lilly Wiles and Rosalee Barber, and two brothers, Marvin and Guilford Barber.
Those left behind to cherish Sara's memory include her sister, Viola Barber Brandon of Grace Ridge; four nieces, Marquean Cole, Nancy McFalls, Judy Lane Davis, all of Morganton, and Becky Underwood of Greensboro; and three nephews, Kenneth Ross of Morganton, Larry K. Wiles of Hickory, and Rodney Fine of Texas. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 5th 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Thompson officiating. Sara will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 407 S. Green Street, Morganton, NC 28655.
The family would like to thank the caregivers of Grace Heights, Burke Hospice, and Dr. Plyler and his staff for all the outstanding care given to Sara.

My condolences to the familly. I remember Ms. Barber from her store and the patience she had with us as kids. Her store was one of my fondest memories of growing up in Morganton. God truly has an Angel in His presence now.

I remember Mrs. Barber, when as a child I attended piano lessons nearby, and my mother enjoyed stopping in at Mrs. Barber's store. Her picture is just as I remember her. My sincerest condolences to the family.

Ms. Barber will be greatly missed in the Morganton Community. I know that Ms. Sara had a part in bringing me to Christ as a young man. She was always proudly doing the work God laid out for her.
