Dr. Clarke H. Garnsey, born September 22, 1913 in Joliet , IL, died Saturday, March 10, 2012 at his home in El Paso, TX. He retired as Professor Emeritus of Art History and former Chair of the Art Dept. at UTEP in 1979. He received his diploma from Cleveland School of Art, BS Ed., MA, and PhD (Latin American Colonial Art in Cuba) from Western Reserve University. He also held Chair of Studio Work at Amarillo College and Chair of Art History at Wichita State University.Clarke served his country, first as an artist with the WPA, painting murals in schools, and producing etchings of historic buildings in his childhood home state of Florida, and then in the US Army Air Corps in WWII. He was a member of the College Art Asn, Soc. Of Arch. Hist.,TX Fine Arts Asn., TX Asn Sch of Art, Amer. Soc. Of Marine Artists, and Rio Bravo Watercolorists. He worked in many media: watercolor, oils, prints, enamel, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Bushniell and Sibyl Van Pelt Garnsey, Jr., his siblings, Charles B. Garnsey,III, Georgia V.P. Rose, and Sibyl W. Gore, by his first wife, Jean S. Shoemaker, and his second wife, Helen T. Blanchard. He is survived by step-daughters Mary B. Davidson and Barbara B. Hohenberg, and nieces and nephew, Gail Garnsey-Banay, Georgia (Van) Holtgrewe, Mary R. Mas, Wilhelmina R.Pascual, Henry E. Rose, Jr., and their children and grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Harding-Orr and McDaniel in El Paso at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday March 22, 2012.
