Chief Master Sergeant Dewey Branson Hooper, Sr., United States Air Force Retired, 92, of Savannah, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a lover of the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was a kind-hearted gentleman who would do anything for anyone at any time.
He was born in the Persimmon Community near Clayton, GA, and was preceded in death by his wife, Willilou Morel Crane Hooper; parents, Carl and Belle Hooper; sister Bernice Hooper Hunt, brother Ralph Hooper, and sister Bonnie Hooper Page.
Mr. Hooper served during WWII in the United States Army. He was assigned to the Medical Detachment of the 482nd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion attached to the 9th Armored Division as a Medic. His battalion served at the Battle of the Bulge, the Bridge at Remagen, The Ardennes, Rhineland, and other engagements. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic service, bravery, and aggressiveness under fire. He exhibited complete calmness during the heaviest of fighting and on one occasion when men were injured by a direct enemy hit, he drove across an open field in a vehicle, exposed to German fire, to the position. Single-handed, he assisted three wounded men into the vehicle and returned them to the aid station. His courage and devotion to duty reflect credit upon himself and the service. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he continued to serve his country in the Vietnam War, Morocco, Germany, France, and various state side assignments, and as NCOIC of the Base Clothing Sales and Base Commissary
He was a longtime member of the former Epworth United Methodist Church, and a current member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church.
Mr. Hooper was also a member of Landrum Lodge #48, F. & A.M's, for over 60 years, and the Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Savannah.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Dewilla Hooper, Susan Powell (Tommy), Dewey B. Hooper, Jr. (Ellen), and William Hooper, Sr. (Amy); grandchildren, Rachel Watford (Don), Adam Hedgecoth, Thomas Powell (Lauren), Kate Powell, William Hooper, Jr., Rebecca Hooper, Lauren Hooper, Julia Hooper, Dewey B. Hooper, III, and David Dunlap; great-granddaughters, Dora Watford, Violet Powell, Savannah Dunlap, and soon to arrive Ruby Watford; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Deepest sympathy to all of you. Your Facebook posts over the last few days have reminded me of the good times shared on several occasions with your family at Mina and Raymond's beach house. Your Mom and Dad were always delightful, and I enjoyed spending time with them. They were a loving and very caring couple. May God bless you with His comfort and supernatural peace during this time of grief and sustain you with happy memories in the days ahead. Love, Dwight and Ernestine Tart

My father, who worked with Chief Hooper in the Air Force in Germany, held him in the highest regard. Dad had the utmost respect for Chief Hooper and considered him a colleague and friend.
As my best friend's father, I knew Chief Hooper as a kind and loving southern gentleman who adored his family. He always had an interesting story to tell. Even when he exhibited an occasional bout of stubbornness, the twinkle never left his eyes. He was precious to me and I loved him and his entire family.
His legacy of heroism, patriotism and dedication live on in the lives of all who loved him.
