Dwight Meierhenry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 28, 2017.

They say memories are golden,
well, maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.
A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died.
In life I loved you dearly,
in death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.
If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us
one by one,
the chain will link again.

Years later, I am writing a message for Dr. Meierhenry. I worked with him many years ago as an office manager. I was a single parent and he was always very kind to my children. He was attentive with them and they appreciated it. to this day they have fond memories of all kinds of small gestures from Dr. Meierhenry. thank you forever for all your goodness.

You had the gift Doc. Kindness, gentle humour, sincere warmth and friendliness and great skill and knowledge in dentistry. What do I do now Dr. Meierhenry, who do I go to now? There has not been one dentist that can even shine your shoes. I´m struggling to find one that can come close to you. You really cared and made me and my family members and friends feel so comfortable and in good hands. What a rare bird you were. You are truly missed and so appreciated. All the work in my mouth is yours..I´m just beginning to need refreshing. No clue which dentist to go to. I loved hearing stories about your daughter and family. You were truly a good man. My sincere condolences to your family. If you can, send me a sign of which dentist to go to. You are missed here on earth. Sincerely...

I only know Dwight through his daughter, Lynn Carey -Saylor, and I can say that his light shines through her in many, many, ways. Thank you for bringing this ray of sunshine into my life, Dwight. I so wish I had had the opportunity to meet you but feel I know you through her, and I am honored on this very special anniversary.

My father and Dwight's were good friends. They taught at the U.Nebr. in the late1940's. Dwight and I went to Sunday school together at the EUB church in Lincoln. In high school we played football against each other and each gave his full measure of effort. He was a great kid and always had my full respect. V. Franklin Colon, M.D.

We become nostalgic as Christmas approaches and the year draws to an end. I've been thinking about my days in the Navy as a dental tech. Dr. Meierhenry was the most amazing and fun dental officer I had the pleasure of working for. I'll never forget him.

Barb and family Meierhenry we all hope our friends will last forever though intellectually we know this will not be. Your loss is beyond quantification but it is no doubt heartening to realize there are so many others who share your loss and care for you. Dwight will live in the memories of so many friends. We were so very sorry to learn that our beloved dentist had passed away. He was our dentist for thirty years. He was such a wonderful, caring person. His kindness and compassion was without limits. We will miss him so very much! It will be so difficult to go to his office and know he is no longer there. I will never forget that gentle pat on my face whenever he entered the room!

I have a few memories of Dr. Meierhenry over the years that I was thinking about as I listened to all of the great stories shared at his service today. I am the third one in my family to become a dentist here in Las Vegas and I remember my dad sharing a great friendship with him over the years. I played soccer with his sons growing up and then as I got into UNLV and joined a fraternity, I heard that there was a really nice alum that offered his house to help us with our fraternity. I remember going to the address and him opening the door and I realized I had joined the same fraternity that he was in. (And my own Dad at another school). I remember him always having two pairs of glasses with him on his head :) and when I graduated from Dental school and came back to Las Vegas, my Dad and I would attend dental meetings that he always seemed to be at and always had the glasses with him :). He was an amazing dentist and truly wanted every one of us new dentists to succeed and do well. His love for the profession, his patients and his family will be deeply missed. He was the type of person that led by example and was never afraid to help out where and whenever it was needed. Our dental community in Las Vegas lost one of its pillars last month but his memory and legacy will never be forgotten.
Love and prayers to your family.
Warmest regards,
Tom Keating

My condolences to Barb,Lynn,Kurt and the rest of the family. I was saddened to hear about Doc's passing. I worked for Dr Meierhenry from 1979 until 1996 approximately, as a dental hygienist. Doc was a great boss who inspired us all. He was genuine and loved being a dentist. I truly learned from him. As Doc would have said,"They just don't make them like HIM anymore."

No greater man has walked on this planet nor flown in its skies. I respected, admired and loved you as did so many, many others. I was truly elated when you didn't have to perform a root canal. I will miss your big hand's reassuring touch on my arm as you sauntered into the room. We are all at a loss without you in this world. Deepest condolences to your dear family and all who loved you.

My sincere condolences to you, Barbara and family - and brothers Kent and Redge. I'm sorry I can't be with all of you for the Memorial Service this Saturday, but my heart goes out to all of you. I have such fond memories of our family reunions from earliest days while growing up in Nebraska, and the unofficial "mentorship" cousin Dwight provided when I left the farm and entered the University in Lincoln. And in later years, it was always a pleasure to visit with Dwight, and hear of all his many (inexplicable?) interests and adventures. We have a lost a good one, for sure, and he will be missed and remembered by many.

My sincere condolences to Barbara, Lynn, Kurt, and the rest of the family. Doc was truly one of the best people I've ever known, and I've known him most of my life. As. Kid, I lived just a few blocks away from his practice, so it was a simple bike ride away. I was always amazed that a guy that raced cars, and had these huge Harley Davidson hands, could not only be a Dentist, but be among to top of his field. I'm saddened that we didn't make time to ride more than we did, but I will always cherish the moments spent with Doc. The conversations that took place in that chair or in between pit stops on our bikes will never be forgotten. Godspeed, Mr. Meierhenry

I was saddened to hear that Doc had passed away. I worked for Doc from 1984-1991 until I got married. He was my first doctor I worked for after I finished Dental Asst. school. He was a very gentle person to work for and truly a one of a kind. I still talk about how he brought the computer, fax machine and every gadget to make our workplace better even though we resisted at the beginning. My last day of work was the hardest knowing that I would be leaving one of the best dentist to work for.
My condolences to Barb, Lynn, and the rest of the family. RIP Doc.

March 12, 2017

I met Dwight for the first time in 1988, I had transferred to UNLV and along with three other Phi Delta Theta transfers from different universities had begun the arduous task of founding the Nevada Beta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta. The Phi Delt headquarters provided a list of alumni living in the Las Vegas area, and of course Doc was one of them. We sent letters to everyone on the list and one of the first Alumni to respond and the first I had the pleasure of sitting down to meet face-to-face was Doc. A few minutes into our first meeting and Doc had offered the use of his incredible house for virtually any type of event and insisted on giving me $100 towards anything we needed and of course I had my first dental appointment with him scheduled the following week.

Doc was instrumental to the success of Nevada Beta, hosting the very first rush/recruiting event at his home not far from the UNLV campus. He opened his home, and his wallet, to us on numerous occasions over the course of our first few years. Without his unending support we would not have enjoyed the early successes that we did, and quite possibly may not have become a Chapter at all. He welcomed every one of us as if we had been initiated with him at The University of Nebraska. Not one time over the past 25 years that I visited him at his office did he fail to inquire about my father, my sister, and the Nevada Beta Chapter.

Doc, thank you for all that you did for me, for my family, and for all of the men of Nevada Beta, the ones that had the pleasure to meet you and to all those that have and will follow after. Without a doubt you embodied the spirt of Phi Delta Theta and implemented the last line of the pledge oath in every aspect of your life, I will strive in all ways to transmit the Fraternity to those that follow after, not only, not less, but greater than it was transmitted to me.

Barb and Lynn: I doubt that you remember me Barb, but I was stationed with Dwight at MCRD, San Diego, Ca. in when I was having my first tour of duty in the Navy. I made it a career for 27 years while you guys got out and went to Las Vegas. I always thought that was a great choice for Dwight. Of the whole group at MCRD at that time Dwight was my favorite. We did quite a lot of things together---he tried to teach me to play handball for example but that proved hopeless. He was an astonishingly good athlete. We went our separate ways in 1965 but I kept track of him a bit from a distance---i.e. I was aware that he had become President of the Nevada Dental Association when that happened. I am sorry that I never maintained closer contact. My loss for certain. He was a great guy and an inspiration to me even at that time. I am, indeed, saddened to hear of his passing and my thoughts are with you as deal with this profound loss.

March 12, 2017

I was privileged to be Dr. Meierhenry's dental tech when he was a lieutenant in the Navy. He was such a bright, interesting guy, with an amazing sense of humor.

He once had a Marine private go down the hall to another dental officer's unit and sing "Teddy Bears' Picnic" at the top of his lungs! He was a trip. I'll always cherish the memories I have of working with him.

This man meant the world to my daughter, whom he openly welcomed into his practice more than 9 years ago even though he preferred not to have children as his patients. You see Madison Mongeau was 8 years old and the third generation of patients in this family to be his patients. She was so welcomed and happy to see him. Never a problem and she generally loved going to his office. The birds he had allowed her to not be nervous and his jokes and smile always lightened her mood. He will truly be missed as a dentist and a kind man. Who cries when their all time number one dentist dies? Madison Mongeau...RIP

Dr. Meierhenry was a kind, gentle bear of a man, I first went to him 1971, I was a teenager then, afraid of dentist and needed dentures. He put my fears to rest and he teased me about my Irish chin, He not only made me the most beautiful set of dentures, he became my friend. I last saw him in 2015 when he made my 3rd pair of dentures and he still gave me a beautiful smile. I will miss him greatly. My prayers go out to the family. Rest in Paradise Doc...

Dwight was a wonderful man whom found opportunities and goodness in all people. He was a skilled professional in his dentistry field and a teacher. He taught dentistry and life events. If you had the opportunity to know him beyond his profession, he was an achiever in many fields outside of dentistry and enjoyed sharing the experience with his audience. He loved his wife & children and enjoyed sharing their success. He will be missed and proud to have been his friend and business partner.
