Grace Gough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2014.

Grace "Arlene" Fullner was born in Stanton, Nebraska to Albert and Lillie Fullner. She was named for her aunt Grace but always used her middle name, Arlene. She lived on a farm with her parents and brother, Rolland in Nebraska until she was about 14 years of age. They then moved to Lancaster, California and then to Long Beach for a better climate and to be near her mother's two sisters. After the death of her mother, Arlene took on the responsibility of caring for her father and working first a shoe store and then as a teller in a savings & loan where she met her future husband, Joe Gough. They were married on November 23, 1952. They bought their first home in North Long Beach where they brought her father to live with them. She instantly became a mother to Joe's daughter Mary and they subsequently had three more children together, Gary, Janet and Brian. In 1973 the family then moved to their home in Seal Beach. As time progressed they became grandparents of 7, great-grandparents of 5, and great great-grandparents of 2. They always said that family was their greatest joy. It was never unusual to have a family gathering of 20 or more people with Arlene doing most of the cooking. That was until she decided to RETIRE from cooking. Then she and Joe took most of their meals out. After motherhood, one of her greatest passions was traveling. Since Joe was a teacher they were afforded the luxury of having summers to do just that. When the children were still at home they spent summers in a travel trailer since they felt that "you had to eat anyway" and in those days it didn't cost much to park a trailer in a campground. They traveled all over the Western United States and Western Canada as well as a cross country trip that included one to the family homestead in Pennsylvania. After 25 years of being a full time homemaker Arlene decided to go to Real Estate school and passed her California Real Estate exam on her first try. This additional income provided the means to expand that travel luxury to include cruises. Those became her favorite! Arlene always had a stack of travel brochures and Joe was good at supplying the maps to highlight their tentative routes and destinations, being sure they always had a room reserved for the night. When they weren't taking cruises they would pick a destination to fly to and then rent a car to do their sightseeing. Her travel plans were cut short by the death of her beloved husband, Joe, on October 31, 2011. After Joe's passing, she replaced her traveling with dining out on a regular basis and going to the musical productions at the Carpenter and Segerstrom Centers as well as to the movies. She passed away at her home in Seal Beach on February 22, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. Due to her strong belief in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior we know that she is now in heaven with Him and her beloved husband Joe.
