Harold Ackerman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2012.

DON ACKERMAN A Man's Man and Gentlemen, H. Don Ackerman died peacefully in his sleep Monday morning, Oct. 22, 2012, with his loving wife, Susan, by his side. Don was born in Davenport, Iowa, Sept. 25, 1926, to Virginia and Hal Ackerman. He lived in Springfield, Ill. until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the tender age of 17. He was stationed in San Diego and honorably discharged in 1946. Don graduated U.C. Berkley in 1948 and moved to Las Vegas at age 29 with his young family. Don worked for his father-in-law in the automotive industry, eventually becoming the legendary owner of Gaudin Ford, where he worked up until his last day. Throughout his illustrious career, he was the recipient of many prestigious awards, including an 11-time winner of the Ford 100 Club, Ford's President's Award and Ford Credit, Partners in Quality Award. Along with his wife, Susan, he was one of the founders of the Smith Center for Performing Arts, contributor to UNLV Foundation and many other charitable organizations. He loved golfing and was an avid fan of the Running Rebels and his beloved San Diego Padres. Kauai, Hawaii was home away from home. He was a long-time member of the Las Vegas Country Club, a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church and a sitting member on many boards, last being the Board of Trustees for the UNLV Foundation. He was admired and respected by all who met him, which speaks volumes to his character. He will be deeply missed and we are comforted in knowing that he's in Heaven with our Father by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Marylyn. Don is survived by his loving and devoted wife, of 19 years, Susan; loving son, Sasha (Kim); daughter, Deborah (John); son, Gary (Debbie); grandchildren, Isabella, Laura, Melissa, Andrew and Tara; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, Lisa and Sari Wildman. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Doors open at 10 a.m.

Dear Susan, Sasha, & entire family. Don was a Great Man who loved his Wife, Family and Work above all else, but was a true friend to many, incl. my late Husband Ted and I. We were privileged to be your next door neighbors. Hope he & Ted get together for a round of golf. God Bless you ALL!!
