Herbert L. Johnson, 74, of Las Vegas, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013. He was born April 12, 1938, in Alta, Iowa. Herb served in the U.S. Coast Guard achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. After retiring from the Coast Guard, he was a professional pilot then had a second career as a teacher in the Clark County School District. He is survived by his wife, of 18 years, Andrea; son, Jim of Fontana, Calif.; son, Jeff of Woodbridge, Va.; son, DJ of Las Vegas; sister, Shirlee of Hartley, Iowa; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, at Palm Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Services will be at noon, Thursday, March 14, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City.

Herb and I worked together in the 70's for several seaplane operations in Long Beach, CA. I remember most conversations always started with "I will tell you what" and that comment was always followed by a great plan or answer. He was well respected by all the crew and we especially loved his pranks. He did have a great sense of humor, no doubt about that. He will be greatly missed!
