Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest of 3 children. He had 2 sisters, Marion and Mary.
He grew up in Compton, California and went to Compton College where he became friends with Duke Synder and played ball - first baseman.
He enlisted in the Navy right after Pearl Harbor and spent time in the South Pacific as a Radioman - his ship was the USS Lubbock. He went ashore with the marines and witnessed the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima on Mount Suribachi. He worked for Stauffer Chemical for 46 years. He married Alma Jane Morgan, April 27th, 1940 and they were married for 69 years.
He is survived by 3 children, Mary Margaret, Marilyn and Joe III; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
