Leonard Adside Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 30, 2013.

LEONARD ADSIDE, THE FIFTH CHILD OF TEN, BORN ON MARCH 10, 1955 WAS ANOTHER WELCOMED GIFT TO MARY AND LEONARD KING ADSIDE. ACCORDING TO MOM, HE WAS A VERY HAPPY AND BUBBLY BABY. AS HE GREW OLDER, HE WAS TAUGHT ALONG WITH THE REST OF US THE IMPORTANCE OF GOING TO CHURCH, FOLLOWING CHRIST'S COMMANDMENTS, AND "HONORING THY MOTHER AND FATHER THAT THOU DAYS MAY BE LONGER." HE FOLLOWED THESE GOLDEN RULES PRETTY MUCH UNTIL HE WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL AND BRIEFLY DETOURED IN HIS THINKING. HOWEVER, HE BOUNCED BACK, BEFRIENDED INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE WHO WERE WORKING TOWARDS A GOAL, GOT BAPTIZED, GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL AND SERVED BRIEF TIME IN THE MILITARY. UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITION THAT RESULTED WHILE SERVING OUR COUNTRY, HE WAS RELEASED WITH AN HONORABLE DISCHARGE. THAT EXPERIENCE WAS SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING I WOULD IMAGINE, WHICH HE RARELY DISCUSSED. YET HE SEARCHED FOR JOBS AND DID FIND WORK, PERFORMING A VARIETY OF DUTIES FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. PERHAPS HE BECAME DISCOURAGED WITH THE TYPES OF JOBS HE HELD AND EVENTUALLY, SLOWLY STARTED HEADING DOWN THE ROAD OF SELF-DESTRUCTION WITH SOME INTERVENTIONS IN BETWEEN. TO HIS CREDIT, THOUGH, HE WAS VERY PERSONABLE, MADE FRIENDS EASILY AND WAS QUITE A "SALESMAN," AND HE KNEW GOD'S WORDS AND HIS PROMISES. SOME PEOPLE WOULD OFTEN EXPRESS HOW SWEET AND INDUSTRIOUS HE COULD BE AND HOW THEY ENJOYED HIS PRESENCE. I LOVED HEARING HIM LAUGH WHILE SAYING, "HEY SIS! THIS IS YOUR BROTHER SOUP!" HE EVEN TOLD ME THAT THE GREATEST GIFT THAT SOMEONE COULD GIVE HIM WAS LOVE. AND I KNOW HE WAS SHOWN AND FELT LOVED BY SOME. TRAGICALLY, WHEN HE STARTED ASSOCIATING WITH THE WRONG CROWD, AND WANTED FAST MONEY, HIS LIFE BECAME TOPSY-TURVY. NO, I'M NOT PUTTING THE BLAME ON OTHERS; HOWEVER, THERE WERE SOME UNSAVED PEOPLE IN HIS LIFE THAT HE LET IN AND WERE A PART OF HIS RUIN AS WELL AS THEIR OWN AND EACH OTHERS.' HIS FAMILY TRULY LOVED HIM AND EXERTED MUCH EFFORT TO STEER HIM IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION; ESPECIALLY, OUR PRECIOUS MOTHER (WHO PASSED AWAY IN 2011). SHE CRIED AND PRAYED OFTEN THAT THE STREETS WOULD NOT ENGULF HER CHILD AND SHOWED HIM UNDYING LOVE, DESPITE THE NEGATIVITY. ABOUT A YEAR BEFORE MOTHER PASSED, HE APOLOGIZED TO HER FOR HIS MISTAKES, WHICH FILLED HER HEART WITH JOY AND PRAISE. OUR DAD (WHO PASSED AWAY IN 2007) WOULD HAVE "SOUP" HELP WITH THE LAWN BUSINESS AND PROVIDE ENCOURAGEMENT; HIS OLDER BROTHER BOBBY, WOULD HELP HIM FINANCIALLY AND PROVIDE A PLACE FOR HIM TO LIVE PERIODICALLY; HIS OLDEST SISTER JOYCE (WHO PASSED AWAY AUGUST 2012) WOULD UPLIFT HIM SPIRITUALLY WITH WORDS OF WISDOM, HIS SISTER CHRISTINE, AN AMBASSADOR FOR CHRIST TOO, SUPPORTED HIM IN COUNTLESS WAYS, AS WELL AS HIS BABY BROTHER, NATHANIEL (WHO PASSED AWAY IN OCTOBER 2009); ALSO, HIS SISTERS JOANNE AND SHEILA PROVIDED SUPPORT. FURTHERMORE, SHEILA, THE YOUNGEST WOULD VISIT HIM IN THE HOSPITAL DURING THE LAST TWO YEARS OF HIS LIFE, BRINGING HIM COMFORT, MOTIVATION, AND FORGIVENESS IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING TANGIBLE THINGS HE REQUESTED. PLUS, HIS OLDEST BROTHER, JEFF OFFERED HIM SOUND ADVICE AND OFFERED HIM A TEMPORARY PLACE TO LIVE DURING LEONARD'S EARLIER YEARS. HE HAD OTHERS WHO WERE IN AND OUT OF HIS LIFE, SUCH AS DIANNE SMITH WHO BORE THEM A SON. HER OTHER CHILDREN WERE IN AND OUT OF HIS LIFE AS WELL, WHICH HE HAD MENTIONED TO ME THAT HE LOVED THEM AS IF THEY WERE HIS OWN. DIANE WOULD ALSO VISIT OUR BELOVED BROTHER OFTEN WHILE HE WAS HOSPITALIZED. OUR BROTHER CURTIS ALONG WITH OTHER RELATIVES AND FRIENDS WOULD ALSO VISIT HIM. LEONARD, NICK NAMED, "SOUP" WAS NOT ALWAYS THE RECEIVER, BUT HE WAS A GIVER TOO. HE WOULD PERFORM HARD LABOR FOR LITTLE OR NOTHING, AND WOULD "WORK BY THE SWEAT OF HIS EYEBROWS." ALL IN ALL, BASED ON OUR MANY CONVERSATIONS ON THE PHONE AND NUMEROUS LETTERS HE'D MAIL TO ME IN HOUSTON PRIOR TO HIS EXTREME HOSPITAL STAYS, I BELIEVE THAT HE GENUINELY WANTED AND TRIED TO QUIT HIS OLD HABITS AS YOU WILL READ ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES, WHICH WERE WRITTEN IN HIS OWN HANDWRITING.

Dysha McCrary

Grandpa Leonard

I know we are all feeling a little bit sad,
That we've lost our Grandpa, our friend and our dad
Together we have cried an ocean of tears
As we feel so empty and hold many fears

But Grandpa would want us to know he's in a good place
And that he watching us all with a smile on his face
As we have made him so proud, as proud as can be
That he has raised such a beautiful and special family

Thinking back now I really must say
I feel lucky and privileged to have known Grandpa to this day
For in my life, you have played a special part
The memories I will treasure and keep close to your heart
Although he has gone we will always be together
And his spirit will live on in each one of us forever

And now I would like to thank the good Lord above
For blessing us with our Grandpa with his kindness and love

Dear God, if it is not too much fuss
Take extra special care of our Grandpa as he is very dear to us
Grandpa if you are listening say a prayer for us every day
Be sure to protect us and guide us on our way
We know when God called you, you had to go
But we want you to know Grandpa we miss you and love you so.

CHRISTINE ADSIDE HOLBERT

JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND YOU WILL SEE
ALL OF THE MEMORIES THAT YOU HAVE OF ME.
JUST SIT AND RELAX AND YOU WILL FIND,
I'M REALLY STILL THERE INSIDE YOUR MIND
FOR I'M IN A PLACE THAT'S FILLED WITH TRUE
LOVE, JOY, AND HAPPINESS;
SO DRY AWAY THOSE SILENT TEARS
GOD WANTS ME NOW CAN'T YOU SEE?
HE HAS ME IN A PLACE, SO I COULD BE FREE.

On behalf of my loving brother,
YOUR SISTER
CHRISTINE ADSIDE HOLBERT

SHEILA ADSIDE

MANY THINGS ABOUT TOMORROW
I DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND
BUT I KNOW WHO HOLDS TOMMORROW
AND I KNOW WHO HOLDS MY HAND
FOR EVERY FOLLOWER OF CHRIST
THERE IS A RACE TO RUN
AND WHEN WE CROSS THE FINISH LINE
WE'LL BE WITH GOD'S BLESSED, BELOVED SON.
SO WHEN THAT DAY COME, I WILL SAY TO
MY FATHER IN THE LORD, GUIDE ME AND “HOLD MY HAND.”

IN MEMORY OF MY LOVING BROTHER,
LOVE SHEILA ADSIDE
