Patrick Waite Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 3, 2013.

WAITE, PATRICK JOHN, REV. Father Patrick J. Waite, a Roman Catholic priest who served for 26 years as a U.S. Navy chaplain, died in peace with his Lord on Sunday, December 30, 2012, at his home in San Diego. He was 85. The son of James and Eva Waite, Father Pat, as he was known to all who loved him so dearly, was born in Carter, South Dakota and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, and an M.S. in Education from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. He studied for the priesthood at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Conception, Missouri, and was ordained as a priest of the Sioux City, Iowa diocese on May 5, 1954. He served in several parishes in the Sioux City diocese before entering the Navy as a Catholic Chaplain in 1961. Father Pat had served as a U.S. Navy enlisted man for one year immediately following his graduation from Trinity High School, Sioux City, in 1945. As a Navy Chaplain, he served at various bases from Newport, Rhode Island and Pensacola, Florida, to Kodiak, Alaska, Pearl Harbor, Camp Pendleton, Calif., Okinawa and Yokosuka, Japan. He was particularly proud of his tours of duty with the United States Marines. Father Pat retired from active duty in 1988 and settled in San Diego where he continued to perform weddings and baptisms and to provide friendship and support for his many friends who continued to solicit his counsel and advice and to root for his Yankees and the fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He is survived by his brother, Don Waite and Don's wife Anna of Saratoga, CA, longtime family friend and caregiver of many years, Mary Ehlman, and myriad nephews, nieces and cousins. The Viewing will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil and Rosary service from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 4th, at Clairemont Mortuary, 4266 Mt. Abernathy Ave., San Diego, CA 92117. The Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Jan. 5th, at 1:00 p.m. at Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church, 3131 Governor Dr., San Diego. Burial will be at Miramar National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 7th. The family requests donations to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.

Father Pat was a light and wonderful "member" of our Larsen family. Married us all and baptized the kiddos. Great "sea stories" and a cup of tea were always guaranteed.
