Susan Bryant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2010.

BRYANT, SUSAN REBECCA SAWYER, 61, died June 5, 2010.

She lived most of her life in Birmingham, grew up in the Avondale community and was a member of the North Avondale United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and she attended Auburn University and UAB.

Susan had a remarkably positive attitude about life, even after her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis 25 years ago. She was admired by all for her courage and ability to keep the condition from affecting her outlook on life. She enjoyed reading, travel, keeping up with current events, and visiting with family and friends.

Susan is the daughter of Lily Catherine Nix McAdoo and the late Carlos Milton Sawyer. In addition to her mother.

She is survived by her husband of almost 43 years, Leonard P. Bryant, Jr. ("Len"). Also she is survived by her brothers: Richard Carlos Sawyer (Elaine); Oliver Randall Vines; and Martin Leslie Vines (Pam Glass); by her sister Gwendolyn Diane Sawyer Vadorsky (Stephen Sr.); and by numerous nieces and nephews. Other survivors are her mother-in-law, Betty D. Bryant and members of the Bryant Family: Catherine B. and Lee N. Allen, Johnny P. Bryant, Alice B. and Jim Lenahan, and Mark and Ruth Ann Bryant, along with nine nieces and nephews. Her special friend and caregiver has been Shannon L. Croskey.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 Tuesday, June 8 at Ridout's Roebuck Chapel. A brief interment service for family only will follow at Moncrief Cemetery in Gardendale. Dr. James D. Moebes, pastor of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, will officiate. The family will receive visitors on Monday, June 7 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at Ridout's Roebuck Chapel.

So sorry to hear of your loss. May the peace which comes from memories shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead. Please lean on your friends for strength, and always remember how much you are cared about.
Someone shared this with me when my mother passed and I remember it seemed to help at the time, "What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget." (Unknown).

Len, I'm having difficulty finding the words. My heart is heavy for your loss, while it knows that Susan is in an amazing place and no longer has to suffer through the disease process. She was a very lucky woman to have you to be strong for her and care for her the way you did. I will keep you in my prayers through this next stage of your journey. I know you'll find the strength you need, but be sure to lean on other people and take some strength from them too.
