Albert Edward "Poppy" Mugford, 85, of Franklin passed away Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, New York. He was born February 14, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Anna (Banks) Mugford. Poppy proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He married Patricia Storey on September 9, 1950 at Holy Family Chruch, Brooklyn. Patricia predeceased him on November 12, 1999. Albert began his 45 year firefighting career with the New York City Fire Department as a member of Engine Company 239 Brooklyn. On September 19, 1966 he joined the North Merrick Fire Department and served 25 years. When he moved upstate he joined the Wells Bridge Fire Department and served 20 years as a member and president. Poppy is survived by his four children, Kathleen, James, Daniel and Eileen; "My Angel", Carole; grandchildren, Michael, Marissa, Joseph, Erin, Rachel, Brian, Michael Patrick and Courtney; great grandchildren, Ariel, Sydney and Liam. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River Street, Otego, New York from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 PM. There will be a Fireman's Service at 7:30 PM. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Wells Bridge Fire Department, County Rd 4, Wells Bridge, NY 13859 in loving memory of Albert Edward "Poppy" Mugford.
