I knew Barbara through her brother, my dear friend John, before I moved from Indianapolis to San Diego eighteen years ago. Her world travels had kept her from Indy much of the time, but when she came home I had the good fortune to experience her radiant intelligence and humor. She was and always will be a star in the wonderful Basch family.

Barbara and I were close friends when we both lived in NYC in the late 70's but failed to stay in touch when I moved to Georgia. (I still use the daypack she gave me when I workout in the gym, and I have pictures of her running and hiking.) Yesterday, 30 years later, in an effort to reconnect by searching the internet for her, I was shocked and saddened to find the obituary announcing that she had died just three weeks ago. I will always remember this wonderful person, and I send my deepest condolences to her family and other friends.

Ahhh Barb, I miss you everyday! We were friends for over 40 years! I find your presence when I see turtles, sip tea/coffee, take walks, make travel plans (India), and hear your voice (still)! May your family, friends, colleagues, students, neighbors, (and I) find peace and grace in our grief.

I am so sorry I was unable to be with the Basch family and Barb's friends tonight for the "Celebration of her Life." Barb was a dear friend from Chartrand. Barb, Patti Wohlhieter, and I shared many good times together. And though we called Patti "motor mouth," Barb never had trouble keeping up with Patti! I remember Barb's spontenaity - calling me the day of the 500 race, and saying "let's go to the infield!" And we did. I remember being in West Side Story with Barb, and her Gold Duster. I also enjoyed receiving post cards as she traveled the world, and getting together with her at the family home to view the volumes of picture books of her travels. Though we did not stay in touch, I often thought of Barb and will keep her and the Basch family in my prayers. Barb was a warm, compassionate, fun loving, person who touched many lives. She will be missed.

Barb you were one of my best friends. I am really going to miss talking on the phone, the occasional "Girl's Nights Out", the parties at your house, the stories about your cats, and the fun times we had at School 60. I will definitely remember the time you dressed up as the lion in The Wizard of Oz, the time my class surprised you on your birthday, and the many funny moments with the students. We had nine years teaching together and I wouldn't trade if for the world. You were a dedicated and devoted teacher. You definitely fought your cancer so bravely. My heart goes out to all your friends and family.

To Barbara's family and friends: I taught with Barbara for two years at James Russell Lowell Elementary. I will always remember her passion for justice and for her students. It was wonderful to see the slide show - a glimpse into the complexity and adventure of her life. She left her mark on the world, something I trust would give her joy to know. I'm glad that our lives touched for those two years.

Barb was my sister. She was also my best friend. She and I certainly had our differences but we really respected each other’s opinions. I am really going to miss our “Saturday morning” talks that would sometime go on for hours. I loved our walks and our great love of our “kitty kids”
I feel so blessed to have had her as my little sister and I really missed her when she went off on her adventures.
In the end I was so glad to be right by her side when she went to the Lord and I am looking forward to seeing her there. She is up there with dad and is having a great debate which is something she loved doing.
All of us Basch’s are so proud to have her as our sister and we share that love with her many friends.
I was told I now have another Guardian Angel. I love you and miss you Barb, my little buddy Your loving sister, Shirley

To the Basch family: My memories of Barb go way back to days at St. Mark, and then Chartrand. I remember coming over to your house, and thought the basement was the coolest thing I had ever seen! Barb was always lots of fun, and it was nice to reconnect with her a few years ago at a high school reunion. She had a real zest for life, and seemed to enjoy all her adventures! I know your family treasured her, and will miss her dearly. You are all in my thoughts as you move through this difficult time. She is now at peace. Take care.

I will never forget the former M & M days with Barb as our Yellow M & M. Remember when you rented the lion outfit and we all did the Wizard of Oz theme for Halloween at School 60? We all had so much fun that day. You fought the cancer so bravely. My condolences to all your family and friends.

Barbara used to invite me and my wife Cheryl to the neighborhood parties she gave every October at her house on Hinesley Avenue in Indianapolis. It was always great fun to sit by the backyard bonfire surrounded by many of her family and friends from all walks of life. Barbara was a sweet and generous person who truly "never knew a stranger". We will all miss her.

I met Barb when I was an Explorer Scout. Barb took an interest in me. She saw a troubled and confused kid that needed some guideance.
She always was fun to be with and had a fantastic smile.

Some of the former scouts had a reunion last summer and Barb was mentioned several times.
It was an honor to have known Barbara

I'll never forget the time my sister and I visited NYC in 9/1983. I hadn't seen Barb since CHS days, (I lived in TX at the time) but when I called her when we were in NY, she said "let's meet!" and thus we had the best time. She took us to Tavern on the Green, she showed us her basement apartment, her neighborhood, Central Park, the site where John Lennon was shot, etc. That was the best day of our whole 10 days in NY. Barb talked about going to China sometime soon. She was fascinating and I really regret not keeping up with her thru the years. She was a kind, fun, delightful, intelligent, warm person. I'm so sorry for the Basch family loss.

Barb, I will always remember your genuine smile and free spirit. When you walked into the room you made us smile as you were always ready to dance and just sit and enjoy conversation. Your life was well lived. We will cherish the memories forever. Becky Scifres, Carlee and Cole Williamson
