Bettyann Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2013.

Bettyann Hart Moore passed away Saturday at her home at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown, NY. She was born October 19, 1913 in Norwich, NY to Jean Bliss Hart and Robert Finley Hart. The youngest of the Hart family, known as the "seven of Harts", she was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, Howard, and Robert, Jr.; and one sister, Jean Hart Weiland. The family moved to Watertown, NY in the 1920's, where she graduated from Watertown High School. Prior to her relocating in New York City, she was the first swimming instructor for the Crescent Yacht Club's youth sailing program which is now CYC Junior Division Inc. She worked for a number of years in New York City where she married Odien Kurtz Johnston on January 19, 1934. They had three children, Geoffrey Hart Johnston, who died on February 12, 1992, Sally Kurtz Johnston Steele of Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown, and Christopher Allen Johnston (and wife Hope) of Chaumont, NY. Her marriage ended in divorce and she returned to Watertown. She later married William Edward Moore on August 9, 1947, who passed away on August 29, 2002.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Bruce Steele of Boston, MA, Scott Johnston Steele, of Hinsdale, MA, Amy Johnston Desrochers of Marietta, GA, Allen Christopher Johnston of Portland, OR, Barbara Clopper Mulvany of Concord, MA, and John Dalton Clopper of NYC; and six great-grandchildren.

Always a dedicated sailor, she taught sailing for many years, including to a blind couple, and also sold sailboats for Boats, Inc., Chaumont and George W. Merciers, Inc., Clayton. After retirement, she and her husband lived in Ft Myers, Florida but she returned to Watertown after her husband's death. While in Florida, she won the volunteer "Point of Light" award for Lee County, which was presented to her by then Governor Jeb Bush on October 23, 2002 in Tallahassee.

There are no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CYC Junior Division, Inc., PO BOX 456, Chaumont, NY 13622.
