As an 18 year old college kid, I was not sure which folding knife to purchase for EDC. I wrote to Mr. Steele care of SOF Magazine and received a personal reply from him. He recommended the Gerber FS II, which I promptly purchased. Still have it, all these decades later. I will always keep it in his memory

I was shocked to hear of David's passing. Dave was hard to get close to but he made a big contribution to the job we did at DMV. We always enjoyed his training sessions and working with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Dave worked the L.A. area for DMV and I worked the Central Valley and Bay Area. Even when I retired, Dave and I were still co-workers through E mails passing on training and safety information to keep officers safe. He dedicated his life to save others through training and deserves the highest respect. I will miss him and so will many others.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of David. We were good friends during our Army days and always looked forward to hearing from him. My sympathies to Norma and Minnie at this time.

I never did get to meet David face-to-face but enjoyed his articles in Knife World first as a reader, and later appreciated them as editor. His contributions were significant and he will be missed by knife buffs across the country and around the world.

He was a good man, and a trusted friend and colleague. We are diminished.

David Eugene Steele's intellectual generosity, ironclad principles, kindness and simplicity of heart made him a remarkable family man as well as a model for the young fellow I was when I first met him through his daughter Minnie. I will miss him terribly. May his life inspire us all. May the Lord of Israel bless his family. Lucas Guitelmacher (France).

David and I were friends during his freshman year at Regis College. We enjoyed taking fencing together and shared high school memories. May God be with his family to help them remember the good things in his life.

David Steele was my best friend during my Freshman and Sophomore year in college. I have always admired his courage, many talents, and intellectual integrity. Our world is a poorer place without him.
