B.Gen. (ret'd) Edward Alfred Charles "Ned" Amy DSO, OBE, MC, CD, US Bronze Star, Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.
Brigadier Gen. "Ned" Amy passed away peacefully on Feb. 2 at the Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building in Halifax N.S
Born in Newcastle N.B. on March 28 1918, Ned was the son of Walter and Margaret (nee Hubbard) Amy.
Graduated in 1936 from King's College Academy in Kentville N.S. and Royal Military College at Kingston in 1939. During WWII, he participated with distinction as an officer in 3 different Canadian Armoured Regiments (the Ontario Regiment, the King's Own Calgary Tank Regiment and the Grenadier Guards-22CAR) in the Allied invasions and Liberations of Sicily, Italy, and the Normandy to Germany campaign.
Post WWII he commanded The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School, The Royal Canadian Dragoons, The 1st Canadian Contingent to the UN Force in Cyprus, the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade Group in Calgary, and the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Germany. He served as GS01 to the Commonwealth Division in Korea, and as a staff officer to both SHAPE and NATO Headquarters. At CFHQ Ottawa served as Director of Armour, Director Operational Support Requirements, and as Director-General Land Forces Operations.

In 1975 Ned and his precious Jean moved to Mahone Bay where they spent 30 joyous years of retirement together in the company of wonderful friends.
Ned enjoyed fishing, hunting, and being in the company of family and friends. He lived a Christian life with extreme modesty and compassion. Whether as an officer, husband, father, uncle, or loyal friend, his gentle self-deprecating sense of humour, commitment to life long volunteerism, and sunny disposition elicited affection and respect from all who knew him. Bob and Mike
Many years have pasted since I spent time with you at your cottage in Ontario. I remember your father as a soft spoken man yet with an inner force that needed to be respected. My father, Major Peter Wilson had great admiration for yours, having served him at Camp Gagetown. The last time I saw your parents was in 1976 when my brother was killed flying a RCAF Tracker out of Shearwater NS. Yours parents kindly invited myself and my parents to Indian Point for dinner and my father really appreciated having the support. I know what it feels like to loose a parent as mine are now both deceased yet life goes on.
All my condolences

Dearest Bob and Mike:
I was so sorry to hear the news about your Dad. One of the wonderful things about my parents moving to Mahone Bay was that they met and became wonderful friends with some kind and facinating people - especially your Mum and Dad. Even when your Dad moved to Halifax, his visits after Tai Woo or his dropping in sometimes with both of you included were always wonderful and they brightened up many an afternoon (even if a blueberry pie was not produced). He was a humanitarian and brought kindness and joy to many people. I am so fortunate that I got to meet him and enjoy his company during many times I was over visiting in Mahone Bay. Thinking of you both and I only hope that your Dad, Bill Hayes, and my Dad are having a great and fun meeting of the ROMEO club with many with their friends and family in the place up above.
Thinking of you both

Dear Mike and Bob,
Your parents were so good to me when I attended Carleton University in Ottawa in the early 1970s. They would invite me over for a good home-cooked meal and wonderful and engaging conversations. Deepest sympathies.

I had the great honour to get to know this great man and his family well during year (1966-67) when I was his ADC when he was Commander 4CMBG and Commander Canadian Land Forces Europe. He and his beautiful wife Jean always treated me with gloves of respect and kindness, even after I had screwed something up. Mostly, I was in awe of this bright, energetic, universally-loved war hero who taught me so much that remains with me to this day. His kind, alas, seldom grace our lives, and those who can now celebrate his have been truly blessed. We'll always remember him.

My brother Hugh Hopkins was at RMC in Ned's Class and the Ontario Regiment. They were good friends and spent a lot of time together. I remember visiting them in a rural camp in Sussex during the War. It was good to read the detailed Obituary and it brought back many memories.

My deepest sympathies Mike and Bob. I have great memories of visits over the years with your Dad and Mom, and I know how special they were to my parents as well. My Dad and I really enjoyed our short visit with Ned last June. I can see from his accomplishments how many people have known and respected him over the years, both in his career and personally. He had a great sense of humor and always seemed full of energy, optimism and life. We will all miss him.

Our profound sympathy to all of the Amy family on the passing of Ned. He was a great soldier and friend. Ron met Ned at RMC in 1938, and Ron and Bea were able to find the Amys an apartment in Ottawa when the need was dire and housing short after the war. We are thinking fondly of Ned and Jean today as always.

I was very saddened to read of your father's passing. Your parents were very good friends of my parents, Joan & Gordon Fawcett. After I read the obituary, a flood of memories came back about the times we had living next to you in Petawawa and when I was able to visit them in Nova Scotia. Your parents were very loving, generous and kind people. Your father was always a gentleman, very soft spoken but always commanded respect. He will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you both at this time.

Dear Mike & Bob,
We want you to know that we’re thinking of you, especially today. You have our heartfelt sympathy. As we well know, regardless of age or circumstance, it is very difficult to lose a parent. Regretfully, we are unable to attend your Dad’s service but will be with you in spirit!
Although we are well aware of his distinguished military career, we knew your Dad as ‘Uncle Ned’, a kind and compassionate family man. Mum & Dad always spoke very highly of him, with much love and respect. Fortunately (given that we live in opposite ends of the country) our parents & families had opportunities to get together. I (Kate) have especially fond memories of our time together in Mahone Bay a number of years ago and your parent’s tremendous hospitality! Your Dad was a true gentleman and clearly very proud of both of you! Please do keep in touch.
Love, Kate & Patty (Grundy)

My deepest sympathy to the Amy family. I met the general when I was just an Officer Cadet doing contact training in his 1CIBG Headquarters. He was one of a few officers who always had time for all ranks on his staff. Whenever I was working a night shift, he would come in and pass the time with me and ask how I was doing. A very great and dedicated leader whom I will miss .

Bob and Mike,
I'm travelling this week, so won't be there to share in your grief or in the celebration of Ned's life. He was a cherished friend to both Mum and Dad, and became my friend too over the past few years. He was a warm, gregarious charmer, who will be missed dreadfully. I love the picture that you chose - it captures him perfectly. I'm sorry that I didn't know of his amazing contribution to his country prior to reading his obit: I would have liked to thank him. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I was at RMC with Ned and my older brother Hugh Hopkins was in Ned`s
class there. They were very good friends and went into the Ontario Regiment together.I remember

little out of place in their
camp in the country, but we had
a good visit.
