Elizabeth June Carr Haughton died peacefully April 12, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, William R. Haughton; her parents, Christopher and Anna Carr, her brothers; Buddy and Bobby and her sister, Ann MacKinnel. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut on June 20, 1930.
She was called Betty all her life. As a young Connecticut girl, she enjoyed ice skating, reading, and visits to her family’s farm. Her older sister, Ann, was her mentor in early life.
Betty joined the first woman's ROTC program in 1951. She moved to California and became an Ensign in the US Navy. Her life dramatically changed in 1953 when she met and married Billy Haughton, a Marine, who was at the Naval Hospital recovering from an injury he sustained while serving in Korea.
Billy and Betty married and moved to Dallas where they raised their 4 daughters, Ann, Louisa, Jennie, and Elizabeth, in a home filled with love and hospitality. Belief in Jesus Christ was the foundation of their lives. Grace Bible Church was Betty’s church home for 53 years where she attended and taught God’s Word too many people. Her loving smile radiated the love of Christ Jesus as she was a blessing to all who called her “teacher.”
Betty sewed seeds in hearts and also in her garden. Flowers and vegetables flourished wherever she lived. She became a Dallas County Master Gardener at 78. Those who knew and loved Betty were familiar with her heartwarming ways and her love for her family, Sunday lunches, Haughton tea, Fourth of July floats and picnics, knitted baby hats and blankets, our country, and our military.
Betty prayed about all things. To keep up with her 17 grandchildren, she prayed for them on certain days of the week. Her quiet strength, humble spirit, and daily walk with her Savior is the legacy she leaves with all of us.
She is survived by 4 daughters and their husbands; Ann (Greg) Lamb, Louisa (Dale) Ditto, Jennie (Alan) Hatch, Elizabeth (Martin) Peck. Grandchildren: Bobby Lamb, Charlie Lamb, Chris Lamb, Will Ditto, Stewart Ditto, David Ditto, Jack Ditto, Dan Ditto, Suzanne(Dan) Biase, Campbell (Elyse) Hatch, Clif (Marianna) Hatch, Travis Hatch, Tom Hatch, Jennie (Jake) Ferenz, Abby Peck, Chappy Peck, Alex Ann Peck.
