Evelyn Motl Bubenik, 88, passed from this life peacefully and surrounded by family on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. Evelyn Joyce or "Babe" to her parents and siblings, was born on Dec. 13, 1924, to the late Vince and Frances (Bedrich) Motl. Evelyn grew up in Bell County and was the youngest of five children. She learned to cook, sew and "live off the land" at a very early age. At 14, Evelyn quit school to work on the family farm when she and her parents moved to Littlefield. Four years later, they moved to San Angelo where she worked as a waitress at Alexander's Restaurant. It was there she met the love of her life, Eddie Bubenik. Evelyn married Eddie on Nov. 18, 1946, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall, Texas, in the church's first double ceremony, where Eddie's sister, Lillie, married Walter Pechacek. Evelyn and Eddie lived in Wall and farmed until they moved to San Angelo in 1991. After Eddie's death in 2001, Evelyn lived with her sister, Lillian. For more than a decade, the duo worked in the yard, gardened, baked, canned goods and listened to polka music. Evelyn's ministry throughout her life was to love and serve others. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and served on St. Helen's Altar Society, St. Siena Catholic Daughters and the annual fall festival dressing committee for many years. Evelyn's most joyful times were spent raising her children and spending time with family. She looked forward to picking pecans and gardening with her daughter, Joyce, and she rarely missed an opportunity to ride around on the farm to look at the crops with her son, Chris. Evelyn leaves behind her children, Joyce (Tim) Piland and Chris (Jackie) Bubenik; grandchildren Chance Ames, Danny Piland, Chase Bubenik, Patrick Bubenik and Jessica (Eric) Schmalbach; two great-grandchildren, Selena Ames and Grace Schmalbach; one sister, Lillian Pagel; one brother-in-law, Julius Bubenik; one sister-in-law, Lillie Pechacek; and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Gardeen (Ernest) Sell and Julia (Willie) Juroska; and one brother, Charles (Lorene) Motl. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at St. Ambrose Church in Wall with Deacon Allan Lange officiating. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at St. Ambrose Church with Father Tom Barley and Deacon Allan Lange officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are sent to St. Ambrose CDA Rosary Walk and St. Helen's Altar Society, P.O.
