Petrie, Gladys Mary

It is with deep sadness that the Petrie family announces the passing of Gladys Mary Petrie (nee Scrimgeour), with family at her side, on Wednesday, April 9th 2014, at the age of 95. Beloved wife of the late Robert Inglis Petrie. Survived by her loving children; Janet Petrie, Ross Petrie, Catherine Dyer (Jim), Deborah Waugh (Harry), Peter Petrie (Linda) and David Petrie (Heather Moffat); her grandchildren James Dyer (Kristina) and Ashley, Kylie and Jordan Dyer, Stuart and Craig Petrie, and Nicholas and Matthew Petrie; her great-granddaughters Alexandra and Katrina Dyer; her nieces Donna Scrimgeour (Bill) and Karen Marquardt and sister in law Isobel Petrie. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends, both far and near.
Gladys was born in New Amsterdam, British Guiana, and raised there and in San Fernando, Trinidad. She came to Oshawa for high school and to Toronto for Nursing Western Hospital in Toronto. Gladys and Robert were married in 1949 and moved to Edmonton in 1957, where they raised their family, finally returning to Toronto in 1974. Gladys and Robert travelled to many locales around the world; then Gladys continued her travels with friends. Over the last 25 years Gladys has enjoyed spending her time with her family and watching her grand and great grandchildren grow and mature.

I knew Gladys through my Mom, Margaret Styles (Kinch) who was also a graduate of the Toronto Western Hospital. I met this wonderful lady several times at reunions of the TWH when I would join my mother and the rest of the class of '42. I can remember when although I was a TWH grad of 1966, they made me an honourary member of their class as I turned up at their reunions with my Mom so often. Gladys always made me feel so welcome at these get togethers and was always such a charming host. I know from talking to her, that her family and her nursing 'family' were a wonderful part of her life and I always would get updates from my Mom or Gladys on what all of them were doing. Even after my own Mom passed away several years ago, I kept in touch with Gladys via phone and letters at Christmas. I can remember that Gladys was the main correspondent for her nursing class and was always looking for funny little jokes and stories that she could include in the newsletters she sent out to her class. She was truly a caring lovely lady and I am sure you all will miss her very much. I thank her for being my friend. Norla Styles

Aunt Gladys was and will always be a grande dame; classy and refined, dignified and well-respected. This is how I saw her from my early childhood on and she carried herself in a stylish manner seldom seen anymore. She had a true West Indian charm and told stories that were so real you felt that you were actually there with her. She was warm and kind and will be missed dearly.
Much love to the family.

Deb, Cathy, Ross, Janet, Peter and David, I remember your mother as an elegant lady who always had grace and poise. My mother admired that Gladys always seemed to know what to do and did it well, which draws on her artistic abilities. We are thinking of each of you at this difficult time.
