Helen Ellison, 91, died March 17, 2014, at her home in Ventura after a long illness. Helen was born September 2, 1922, in Reynoldsville, West Virginia, to Nicolas and Parasciva Sherman. She received her teaching degree from Central Michigan College of Education and attended Owosso Bible School. In Michigan, she met and married Forrest (Skip) Ellison. Helen and Skip moved to Ventura in 1965. Helen taught at Santa Paula high school and was an active member of her church. She was an avid letter writer to her many friends. Always perfectly dressed, she was known for her gentle sense of humor and her smile. Helen was preceeded in death by her husband, Forrest (Skip) Ellison, her brothers Nicholas and Alexander Sherman, and her sisters Anna Kilway and Mary Jerome. She is survived by her beloved twin sister, Fimmie Sherman of Ventura, her sister in law Gloria Sherman of Thousand Oaks, her nephews, Art and Wesley Sherman, and her nieces, Bonnie Boroff Martin, Alexandra Chavez, Becky Silvey, and Ann Jones. Special thanks to her caregivers and to Roze Room Hospice for the many ways they helped during her illness. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Charles Carroll Funeral Home (Teloma Road, Ventura). Graveside services will be Thursday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.
