James Chandler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 25, 2014.

JAMES HAYES CHANDLER

"My friends, life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel the way with us. So be swift to love and make haste to be kind."
This was a toast often given by James Hayes Chandler, age 93 of Perrysburg, Ohio, who passed away on March 23, 2014. Throughout his life he heeded his own advice.
Jim was born in Haverford, PA, on March 19, 1921 to the late Helen and J. Hayes Chandler. He was an only child. Jim graduated from Haverford High School where he was an outstanding athlete and scholar. He played football, basketball and baseball. Jim then attended Rutgers University on a full scholarship and graduated in 1943.
Upon graduation, Jim entered the army from the ROTC program. He took officer training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and earned a commission as a lieutenant in the 29th infantry regiment. He saw action throughout Europe during WWII including the Battle of the Bulge, or the Ardennes Offensive, in Belgium. Jim was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal for his service.
After the war Jim began his lengthy career at Owen Illinois, starting as the personnel director at the Berlin, New Jersey plant. It was at this plant that he met his future wife, Lois Elizabeth Lee. They were married October 11, 1951, at Fort Riley, Kansas, before Jim returned to military action in the Korean War.
When Jim was discharged from the army, he resumed his career with O-I in Toledo, Ohio. Jim served as Director of Sales and Marketing for TV Products Division and in 1979, he was named a Vice President of the Division. He was responsible for the marketing and sale of television glass components in the U.S. and abroad. He was also responsible for providing sales and marketing guidance to the optical and technical products operations of the division. Jim retired from O-I in 1989.
Jim loved playing golf. He was once a single digit handicapper while he belonged to Inverness Club, and scored two holes in one. In his later years he especially enjoyed his rounds of golf with the OCHO group. Jim was currently a member of Belmont Country Club and Carranor Club.
Jim was a long time member of the Hermits group and the POETS which regularly met for lunch.
Jim belonged to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Perrysburg, Ohio, where he served as an usher. He was a member of the Toledo American Legion Post 335.
Jim and Lois travelled extensively throughout the world and spent many winters in Boca Grande Florida.
Jim is survived by his wife Lois.
A special thank you to the staff of Kingston Perrysburg and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their kindness to Jim in his final months.
Memorial Services will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 871 E. Boundary St., Perrysburg, OH on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. with Father Jeff Bunke officiating.
Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to St, Timothy's Episcopal Church or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd., Perrysburg, OH 43551. Arrangements are being handled by Witzler Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg, OH (419-874-3133).

Mrs. Chandler
I was so saddened to learn of Mr. Chandlers passing. I went to visit with him when a coworker informed me he had passed. I enjoyed Jims stories of his military days and his many words of wisdom. He was only a kingston a short time, but I really enjoyed his company. May the Lord guide you in this difficult time.
God Bless
Michelle
