Jean Melchior Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 30, 2013.

Jean M. Melchior, 84, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 29th, 2013 in her home. She would have turned 85 on July 2nd, 2013.

She was born Genevieve Marie Romp on July 2nd, 1928 in Gates, Pennsylvania to Nikodem and Katherine (Kobsowicz) Romp, one of thirteen children born to the union of her parents. Jean graduated from Waite High School in 1946. She married Jerry R. Melchior on September 10th, 1955, and he survives.

Jean was a strong woman and a hard worker, having been employed as a production line worker and later a plant expediter at the Libbey Owens Ford factory from 1950 until her retirement in 1982. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a talent for cooking a great number of her specialties throughout the years. Jean took pleasure in dining out with her family, especially at Eddie Lee's. For many years, she hosted annual Christmas Eve celebrations in her home for her extended family as well as some Romp family reunions in her backyard. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp and was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.

But perhaps Jean's greatest passion was for her family. She was fiercely loyal and protective of her family and gave selflessly to those she loved. Nothing made her more proud than to see her children and grandchildren grow and find success in their life's journeys.

In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her brothers Walter, Stanley, Bill, Joe and Ed Romp and sisters Louise Farkas, Vernelle Harper, Betty Pisula, Wanda Simko and Frana McQuillin as well as 2 siblings who passed in childhood. Her passing marks the end of an era for the extended Romp family. Jean's two beloved dogs, Pepper and Molly, await her at the Rainbow Bridge.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of nearly 58 years, Jerry R. Melchior, her son Mark (Lynne) Melchior, daughter Laurie (Jeff) Huskisson and grandchildren Matt (Kelly) Melchior and Rachel Melchior as well as numerous family members, nieces and nephews and friends who will mourn her loss, including her cherished kitty, Daisy.

We will celebrate Jean's life on Friday, July 5th 2013. Friends and family will be received from 10am to 11am at Zoar Lutheran Church, 314 E. Indiana Ave. (at Sandusky Street), Perrysburg, Ohio (419-874-4346) where a memorial service will follow at 11:00. Interment will be private. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honor of Jean are asked to consider the Wood County Humane Society or Zoar Lutheran Church.

I just heard about Jean's passing and I am so sorry for your loss. She was one of my favorite patrons that came into Oregon Library because she always had a smile, some gossip and a great recipe (and sample taste, if we were lucky) to share! Her recipes are in my cookbooks and I will think of her whenever I make them.

Today I made two carrot cakes from a recipe that was giving to me from Jean The handwritten recipe hung on the front of my frig as I read the news in the Toledo blade this morning. I enjoyed seeing Jean at the dental office. We frequently talked about cooking and the blessings of good friends and family. Today I made a copy of jeans recipe and gave it, along with one of the cakes, to another good friend. It was nice to share one of jeans many gifts. With fond memories and condolence

My heart ached when I heard the news of Aunt Jeans passing. All my memories come from our treasured Romp reunions. Good times were had the times she hosted it at her home. My mom learned her secret to a successful garden was to load it full of fish guts. Oh how she would love to talk about her grandkids; she would light up getting us up on their happenings. May all your memories help your heart to be comforted. And know she is in good company up in that heavenly place. A happy birthday wish up to heaven today! Love Tricia McDonald (Pisula)
