JOHN O. SMEAD, SR., "Pops" and "The General", 90, went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family, Thursday, June 12, 2014. Born Oct. 30, 1923 in Fort Wayne, he was a son of the late John and Alice (Pointset) Smead. After graduation, he served in the Army Air Corps during the World War II Era. John worked for Essex for 40 years and was a real estate broker for Smead Realty. He was a member of Living Water Church of Truth and the American Legion. "A devoted husband and loving father, he cherished his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren." He loved the Lord with all his heart and was active in his church. John was a softball and basketball coach, Sunday school teacher, and involved with other ministries such as the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. Surviving are his daughters, Linda (Robert) Gibson and Susan (Donald) Neuhouser, both of Fort Wayne; sons, Pastor John (Lisa) Smead Jr. of Fort Wayne and Thomas (Amy) Smead of Albion, Ind.; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Gloria Musser of York, Pa. and Emma Lindsey of Byron, Mich.; brother, Alfred (Nancy) Smead of York, Pa.; and sister-in-law, Jane Jarvis of Owensboro, Ky. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Alice; three sisters; and one brother. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Rd., Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior. Pastor John Smead Jr. officiating. Calling also from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials may be made to the Living Water Church of Truth.
