Josephine Grant "Jo" Peters
"Jo" March 8, 1923- October 12, 2011 The second of eleven children born to Frank and Maggie Grant Sr., Jo was born at 3 Dollar Bar, Somes Bar, Ca. on the Salmon River. A native of the Salmon, Klamath, and the Rogue Rivers and the St. Francis Abenaki of Ouebec, Canada. A member of the Karuk Tribe. In her youth she lived and attended grade school in Somes Bar, Ca. She attended high school in Red bluff and Etna, Ca. After high school she moved to Eureka, Ca. where she worked at the dry dock welding on navel ships for WWII. She would move a few more times, and finally move to Hoopa, CA. where she would reside for the rest of her life.
Jo was a gifted, multi talented individual who embraced her family's heritage, and legacy of Herbal Medicine, and Doctoring. She preserved and shared her knowledge of Herbs, Basketry, Pottery, Indian Regalia and Jewelry making with all who came to learn, and there were many. There were some who came to be healed, some who came for a short visit, some who stayed a long time, and those who came to take care of her.
In her realm walked many, many friends and family who helped her complete life's circle from the learner student, to the teacher, to the respected elder. She remained active even in failing health, accomplishing what some people only dream about by seeing her book " After the First Full Moon in April" to publication, and the book signing debut.
She was one of the first founding members of the California Indian Basketweavers Assoc., and other various Guilds and clubs.
She opened her heart and home to approximately 27 foster children whom she raised over the years, these were just the ones in the foster care system. She made a positive difference in everyone's life she touched, and left this world a better place.
She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Maggie Grant Sr. Brothers, Maurice, Delbert, and Byron "Bones" Grant, and the love of her life husband, Charles "Slim" Peters. She is survived by her brothers and sisters, Frank & Elinor Grant, Jr., Reggie Grant, Beryl Grant, Vivienna Masten, Millie Grant, and Melissa Morton. Her children, Cheryl and George Beck, Tamara and Cecilia Peters. Grandchildren, Colette, Kenya, and Kyle, and numerous great grandchildren.
A wake will be held starting at 6 o'clock Saturday night at the Assembly of God Church in Hoopa, with Services Sunday at 1:00 pm at the N.F., with internment following at the Hoopa Tribal Cemetery.

Jo, you added such a rich experience to all who met you over the years when you came to the Ca. State Indian Museum in Sacramento. We felt honored that you made the long trip and brought so many wonderful native-made things to share with those who came for the experience of meeting you and purchasing these items from you. Many you made or had taught those who had made them and I am so honored to own many over the years. Your spot at the museum will always remind me of you and I know I'll feel your spirit there each time I enter the building. Your life made such a difference to so many.

May the beautiful things you created and memories that you left with us on earth, will help the young people understand the history of the Native Peoples of the Salmon, Klamath, and Trinity Rivers; and cherish your teachings. Rest in Peace, Jo
And my sympathy to the family, especially my friends, Cheryl and George Beck and their families.
