Mr. Lawrence D. Mark, 89, of Holley, NY, passed away July 29, 2012. Born in Batavia, he married the former Marilyn Sliker, who predeceased him in 1977. A veteran of World War II, he served as a private first class in the U.S. Army 17th Infantry. For 38 years he worked in the Batavia and Holley branches of Marine Midland Bank where customers waited in line for him because he was so nice to work with. He had a lifelong love of horses and regularly attended horse shows, the state fair and harness races, although he never bet on horses. He also coached Little League and enjoyed golf, NY Yankees baseball and the Genesee Country Museum. Music was very important to Larry. He started out playing oboe in his school band and went on to play baritone bugle with the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps in the 1950s and 60s. He sang in the Holley Presbyterian Church Choir and performed in many Holley community musicals. He served as Trustee and Deputy Mayor for the Village of Holley and on the board of Salvation Army and the United Fund of Eastern Orleans County. He was predeceased by his brother Lyle of Batavia. A consummate family man, he is survived by three sons, Thomas (Shirley) of North Chili, James of Holley, and Robert (Robin) of Middleport; two daughters, Diane of Holley and Susan of DeWitt, NY; a brother, Wilson of Salt Lake City, UT; and six beloved grandchildren, Daniel, Sarah Mogle (John), Nicholas (Ashley), Adam, Melissa and Meaghan. The family is pleased to honor his request for a Dixieland style recessional after the memorial service which will be held Wednesday, August 1 at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Holley, 34 East Albion St. Family and friends may call at the house after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels.

It was sad to see an empty chair at the NYS Fair horse show. Larry came to the fair every year since he was 12, 76 years in a row. I looked forward to seeing him there enjoying the horses.

Larry died on what would have been my father, Joe Polowe's, 90th birthday. He and Larry continued their friendship with Paul Kelly and Lynn Browne throughout their lives, and still met for lunch regularly until a couple of years ago. It is so unusual for high school friends to keep up a life-long friendship despite distance and different paths. They were truly good people. They all have passed away within a couple of years of one-another. They are very much missed, but they left behind many good works and much good humor.

I remember your family so well! Your mother babysat me when I was very little. We used to ride tricycles around your front porch, take naps in your upstairs guest room, and look down your laundry chute (which we thought was very cool). I have very happy memories of your whole family. You were all so kind to us. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Diane, Susan and family,
News was shared and I send my condolences and reflect on the many times stories were shared about family during our work and visits. I hope you find strength in the days ahead as you remember all the good times your dad had in his work and service to the larger community.
Stay well,

Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Your dad was a wonderful man. I always appreciated so much that both your parents made sure to come to all of my recitals at RWC. They were special people. Love, Beth Ashbery Priset

Dear Family,
I know Larry through Tom Kerwick. I am so disappointed he will not be at his reunion next week! I enjoyed his wry humor and his gentleness. How lovely that you had him for so many years! I will miss him.
