Mary Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 8, 2012.

BROWN- Mary Josephine Messina Brown was embraced by the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at the age of 83. A native of New Orleans and a resident of Metairie for the last 20 years. Wife of the late Raymond J. Brown Jr. Daughter of the late Barbara Solito Messina and Salvador Joseph Messina. Mother of Kathleen Ann Brown DiBuono (Johnny) and Raymond J Brown III (Denise). Grandmother of Bryan (Tara), Jeffrey (Rebecca) DiBuono and Jennifer DiBuono Sparacio (Sal), Catherine, Courtney, Stephen and Scott Brown. Great-Grandmother of Nicholas & Nathan DiBuono and Jacob Sparacio. Sister of Salvador Messina and the late Barbara Messina Migliore and Ann Messina Cyrus. Friends and family are invited to attend the Memorial Service on Monday, November 12, 2012 from the Chapel of Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans, LA. Visitation from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Catholic funeral mass to follow at 1:00 PM. Interment in Lake Lawn Park Cemetery.

Mary grew-up in the Pilot Land area of New Orleans and attended St. Leo the Great School and St. Joseph Academy. She was a devoted Catholic who was a parishioner at Our Lady Star of the Sea and later St. Angela Merici Church. During World War II Mary joined the workforce. At first she worked at a neighborhood shrimp canning plant and then at the old Dickies Potato Chip factory on Elysian Fields Avenue. Eventually she was employed by the Orleans Parish School Board where she would make life-long friends. After taking more than twenty years off from work to raise her children, she worked at both the Maison Blanche and D.H. Holmes department stores on Canal Street.
Mary was very talented. She excelled at crochet and embroidery creating many beautiful and cherished things for family and friends. Her hand work was truly beautiful. She could elevate gift wrapping to the level of art with the elaborate bows that she created. Mary was an excellent cook who prided herself on providing delicious meals for her family on a daily basis. Her Italian fig cookies were the absolute best. She was very devoted to her family and worked tirelessly taking care of her husband, children and grandchildren.
Mary was a member of the American Legion Post 203, Gentilly Links Women's Auxiliary and the St. Christopher Ladies Rosary Guild. As a member of the Rosary Guild, Mary produced hundreds of hand knotted cord Rosaries that were distributed to the troops in the Middle East. She was generous to a fault with both her time and her talent.
Mary was a very social person and enjoyed being around family and friends. She enjoyed parties, conversation and kidding with people. She particularly liked watching movies. John Wayne was her undisputed favorite actor, and she also enjoyed Bob Hope, Jack Benny and Gracie Allen. In later years, she enjoyed going to the casinos and was often lucky.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Cousin Kathy,Raynond and families,
Ted and I are so sorry to hear about the death of your dear mother. She will always be remembered by us. She made the chili for my wedding reception. It was the best we have ever eaten. Our guest certainly enjoyed it.She had talent at making other things too. She will always remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. You, your brother and yor entire families are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. May god bless you all. Cousins Marie and Ted Bukaske

Kathy and Raymond, I am so sorry to hear about Aunt Mary. When we were at the Cemetery the other day visiting your dad, we told him to wait for her that she would be joining him very soon. I felt a peace when I told him that and I know she is happy seeing him again. It is always sad when they (our family) leaves this world but we know in our hearts they are in a better place.

Dear Kathy & Ray,

My thoughts and prayers are with you! I think that the last time I got to see your Mom might have been at my own Grandma's funeral back in 2006. I still have fond memories of your Mom and your Dad, and even of both of you, at Aunt Dora's Christmas parties in the great big warehouse room behind the grocery and at the 4th of July picnics by Aunt Sarah's and Grandma's house in Gentilly.

Here at St. Louis University, one of ways we live the Jesuit Mission, is to have special prayers for our deceased loved ones during the Month of November. I've placed your Mom's obituary in the prayer bowl here at the School of Nursing.
God Bless You all.

Sharing your sorrow,

Terri
