Melvin Albers, age 95, of Houston, died gently on March 14, 2011 in Houston. Born on July 25, 1915 to Fred Albers and Emma Moellenberndt Albers in Warrenton, Texas, he was the youngest of seven children. He grew up on the family farm in Warrenton, walking daily to school in Round Top. He married Ruby Graeter Nov. 3, 1940. They made their home in Houston and became active members of Bethel Church. This union was blessed with two sons, Harold and Rick M. Albers. Melvin owned and operated Quality Hatchery and Feed Store on the corner of Washington Ave. and Sandman in Houston from 1938 to 1955. In 1955 he formed Pen-O-Rama Pen Co. and operated it for the next 30 years. In 1940 he became an active member of Hermann Sons Lodge #100 and was treasurer for over 30 years. Melvin served as treasurer of Bethel Church for 7 years. He served on the board of directors at Northwest YMCA on 34th street for many years. In 1992 he was awarded the Hermann Sons Humanitarian Award. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for 12 years. His first wife, Ruby preceded him in death on March 25, 1968. On April 8, 1971 he married Evelyn Weder Buchanan. She preceded him in death on August 14, 1993. On March 8, 1995 he married Ruby Braun Zapp. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Elo Albers, Odell Albers, Delta Spies, Verlie Ullrich, Herbert Albers and Welsey Albers and one grandchild, Angela Meredith Albers. He is survived by his sons: Harold Albers and wife Rebecca of Mason and Rick M. Albers and wife Susan of Austin. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Kerbey Albers Johansen, Joseph Albers and Katherine Albers, and one great-grandchild, Liam Emmett Johansen. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Heights Funeral Home and a funeral service will held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2011 at Bethel Church UCC with interment to follow in the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery.
