Nolan Ellmore Barrick passed away in Lubbock on July 4, 2013. He was born in Pearland, Texas on October 30, 2013, the youngest of 3 children of Charles Emery and Idella Hester Barrick. He attended high school in Houston and graduated from the Rice Institute in 1935 with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. He completed his graduate architectural education under William Ward Watkin at Rice in 1937.
After service in the U.S. Navy during World War 2, Nolan taught architecture at Iowa State University and the University of Texas before joining the faculty at the Texas Tech University in 1953. He served as Chairman of the department of Architecture and Supervising Architect. In 1973, he was elected to Fellowship in the American institute of Architects. After his retirement from Texas Tech University in 1979, he operated a stained glass design and fabrication business. Nolan’s stained glass projects have been installed in a number of churches, homes, and businesses throughout West Texas. Nolan was an active member of two Disciples of Christ Churches in Lubbock: First Christian Church and Lubbockview Christian Church.
Nolan Is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Rosemary Watkin Barrick, son, Bruce Barrick, sister, Madge Madden, and brother, Dale Barrick. He is survived by his wife, Betty Barrick, his daughter Anne (Charles) Smith, grandson, Austin Smith, stepson, Roy (Carol) Howell, niece, Barbara (Richard) Chapman, nephew, Noel (Jeannie) Barrick, nephew, Barry Madden and numerous extended family members. A memorial services will be held 3PM on July 9 in Carillon’s Neil Chapel in Lubbock. Visitation will be held Monday 5-7PM July 8, 2013 at Resthaven.
