Carmel ~ Pierre Delfausse (rhymes with applesauce) died at age 97 on March 14, 2014. The fourth son of French Canadian parents, he lived through the Great Depression, was a four-sport high school athlete, fought with the famed Tenth Mountain Division in Italy and sold toys and sporting goods in New York City until the age of 57, at which time he moved to Carmel.
You may have seen this iconic man-about-town with his decorated quarter-staff aiding his every step.
You may have seen his truck filled with Golden Girls – the retrievers he loved so much.
You may have been wheeled to your room at CHOMP by him as he volunteered 9,000 hours in his familiar Red Jacket.
You may have been held up in the checkout line at Whole Foods as he chatted with the clerks.
And you definitely would have seen him over the years at the beach playing his grandchildren.
Pierre was an estate manager in Pebble Beach for decades. He ran eight Big Sur Marathons and held the course record for the over-70 crowd. He was still memorizing poems and Broadway musical scores at the time of his death.
In a last ditch effort to get into graduate school, Pierre donated his body to science. His family wishes him well as he enters a local medical school!
At his request, there will be no service or “celebration” but, we who have known and loved him, thank him for his service and celebrate his life.
Pierre leaves behind his son and daughter, two grandchildren, one great-grandson, his longtime companion, Merryll Cottrell, and her three daughters and five granddaughters.
“For all we know, this may only be a dream. We come and go like a ripple in a stream.”
