Reginald Singletary Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2011.

Reginald Barry Singletary was born on June 17, 1969. He first greeted the world in Columbia Hospital, Columbia, South Carolina. His parents were Mildred and Leroy Singletary. Armed with a great wit, he was raised to be accepting of others and to employ a strong personal work ethic. These were all traits that would help him throughout his life.

Blessed with a balanced attitude, Reggie was able to relate well to others. Reggie has one older sister Felita. He enjoyed spending time with relatives and his grandparents. Reggie's grandparents were Ruth Mae Davis and Leroy Dixon and Rufus and Marion Peterson Dean.

As a young child, Reggie always seemed to enjoy new activities and was constantly pursuing a variety of interests. Reggie liked being actively involved. He belonged to 4-H Club. Some of his favorite pastimes while growing up were playing Spiderman and Superman in his back yard.

Reggie enjoyed doing just about anything. When it came to reading, he enjoyed comic books, Spiderman and Superman were his favorite's. He attended Crane Creek Elementary School.

Known to most people as a focused, logical, open-minded and driven individual, Reggie was able to utilize these qualities to succeed in high school. He was good with facts and had an excellent memory. Reginald also did a bit of traveling during his school years with his family. They traveled each year to Washington DC, Elyria Ohio, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Reggie graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1987.

Reggie enlisted in the Marines on August 4,1987. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, he was 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. Reggie achieved the final rank of Corporal. His honors included Rifle Marksman Badge, Certificate of Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and the South West Asia Service Medal with 2 stars. He showed leadership qualities and could make tough decisions when he was called upon to do so. Reggie was released from military service on September 3,1991.

Reggie and Svetlana met at the Mandalay Bay Resort. Svetlana went to the Resort to apply for a position as a cocktail server. There was an instant attraction and Reggie hired Svetlana that very day. As Reggie was her boss, they were not permitted to date each other. They arranged to meet at the Red Rock Casino for a secret date. Reggie and Svetlana arrived separately and met in the Chandelier Bar. Upon arriving, they were surprised to see people they worked with having a party at the bar. They left immediately and went to the Martini Lounge, where they secretly had their first date. Reggie was so interesting and full of facts about history, travel, and cooking. They shared the same interest an fell in love. At work they pretended to not know each other and in the evening they would meet up.

Reggie proposed to Svetlana twice. For the first proposal- they were having a great time at the the Wynn Resort when Reggie looked at Svetlana and said "Let's get married." She agreed immediately and for several months Reggie was telling everyone they were engaged, however Svetlana did not have a ring. For the second proposal- Reggie made reservations at the Encore Resort. He parked the car, opened her door and got down on one knee, held out an engagement ring and asked " Svetlana, love of my life, will you marry me?" Svetlana was very surprised and happily said "yes."

They were married at the Lakes Wedding Chapel on March 4, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their wedding was held at an outside wedding chapel with a large beautiful lake as the backdrop. They had four bridesmaids, Kristina, Alena, Marina and Olga, Reggie had two groomsmen, Rob and Eric. Reggie and the groomsmen were handsomely dressed in black tuxedo's, white shirts and white satin vests with yellow boutonnieres in their lapels. Svetlana's dress was white and strapless with beading that outlined the shape of the corseted top and cascading pouf's that flowed to the ground. The bridesmaids wore dresses in yellow, each had a different style of their own choosing.

The weather was a little cooler than usual for March however the sun was shining, the lake was a beautiful blue and the birds were singing. Reggie's mother Mildred and his sister Felita traveled from South Carolina to attend their wedding. Reggie and Svetlana had many friends from all over the country. The wedding was private and intimate with everyone wishing them well.

Limousines whisked their wedding party away to the reception at the Blue Martini. Rob created the three tiered red velvet cake of their dreams. Eric presented Reggie and Svetlana with a CD of a song he had written especially for their wedding dance. Everyone had a wonderful time.
Reggie and Svetlana took a short honeymoon several weeks after the wedding to the Grand Canyon. They enjoyed touring the Grand Canyon, taking in the scenery and having meals by the cozy fireplace in the hotel.

Reggie knew this relationship was special and brought into it his gift for being able to give freely and generously. This was just one of the things he did to create a happy home. Reggie was a good listener with an engaging personality, he was able to bring pleasure and unexpected humor to their relationship. The couple incorporated both old and new friends into their life.

Reggie and Svetlana were blessed with one son, Gabriel Leroy Singletary, the second love of his life. Svetlana fondly recalls:

"When I would come home from working late at
night, I would usually find Reggie asleep on the
sofa with Gabriel asleep on Reggie's chest, the
Lakers game playing on the television."

Reggie never seemed to be afraid of work and was often willing, even early on, to tackle new and different challenges. His primary occupation was working as a Food and Beverage Manager. His current position was a program specialist where he would teach operating programs in the Food and Beverage industry. Reggie has traveled around the country with his current position. He especially loved the city of New Orleans- he liked the people, the culture and he enjoyed the food and live music. The happy couple were planning to return to New Orleans to visit.

Reggie enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. He had something of an artistic flair in many of the things that he did. He put this creativity toward all of his pastimes. Some of his favorite hobbies were going to the gym, playing basketball, and cooking.

Throughout his life, Reggie developed many likes and passions. When it came to dining, he particularly enjoyed rib eye steak with a baked potato. Bacon and eggs for breakfast made his day and pancakes were always a treat. Reggie enjoyed watching the History channel and the Sports channel. He took pleasure listening to many styles of music however, Michael Jackson was a favorite. He loved the Lakers, the Cowboys and the Bull's Championship years. He also enjoyed watching his favorite teams and events whenever he got the opportunity.

Reggie Singletary left us on April 25, 2011. He passed away at St Rose Dominican Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was 41 years old. Reggie is survived by his loving wife Svetlana, precious son Gabriel Singletary, mother Mildred and father Leroy, and sister Falita Singletary as well as many relatives and friends.

Svetlana Singletary

To the love of my life. To the man who made my life beautiful, protected me every day and cared as I never've been cared for.
Reggie, my sunshine, I'll miss you every minute. You will be always in my heart and in my soul. You showed me what happiness is and how amazing life can be. My life was fulfilled, we had everything we dreamed of. We were so in love.  Remember, how I would come home after a long day at work sit next to you to share my experience when you look at me, move my hair and say " oh my god baby, you are so beautiful".  How every morning you will dress for work check yourself out in the mirror and say " Baby, your man is a good looking guy" , or " yea baby, I'm so sexy". I'm so crazy about you, I never saw anyone more good looking than you are.
You were very intelligent. The smartest person ever. There was no question you didn't know the answer for. You were my dictionary, I would come to you with any question to find out any answer and learn way more info. I was very proud of your knowledge. It seamed amazing and impossible for a person to know as much as you did.
Your relationship with Gabriel seemed especially exciting. You loved him so much!!! You played ball together, you taught him alphabet, took him to the park, through him in the air and made every moment spent with Gabriel absolutely precious. Your son loves you so much! I see him searching for you everywhere, he turns his head to the tall black men in the grocery store trying to find you. I can't believe I wont see you asleep with Gabriel lying on your chest after returning from work. It used to be my favorite part of the day.
Do you remember our trips? Grand Canyon, Washington, Boston, Chicago, South Carolina, so many beautiful memories to keep from all those happy moments. We were planning on more trips to take, foods to try, babies to raise and it's all gone now. I don't know how to live without you, we were one whole, we completed each other. You were the sun of my life.
Thank you for this three precious years we spent together. Thank you for your love, for the most amazing time of my life. I will always keep you in my heart and will always love you. I'll make sure that your son knows what a great man you were baby.
