Richard Weaver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2013.

RICHARD DAVID WEAVER, SR., 74

Richard "Dick" Weaver, 74, Naples, Fla., passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013, at Physicians Regional Hospital in Naples.
A service of remembrance will take place on Tuesday, December 17, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Naples, 250 Sixth Street South. A private family service and interment will be held at Palm Cemetery in Winter Park, Fla., at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18.
Richard was the son of Kenneth C. and Ursula Morgan Weaver, of Canton, Ohio. He is survived by his son, Richard Weaver, Jr., of Longwood, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Melinda Weaver Dorman and Bryan Dorman of Eagle Lake, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Jack Wilharm of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; three grandchildren, Brendan, Andrew, and Savannah of Eagle Lake, Fla.; and numerous nephews, nieces, and great nieces in Florida and Ohio.
A long-time successful veteran in Florida's travel/tourism and hospitality industry, Richard spent many years in the field of international marketing. Early in his professional career, he worked in television news at the ABC station in Winston-Salem/High Point, North Carolina, and at Orlando's CBS affiliate.
Richard left television news in the early 1970s, and was among the first local executives of Sea World in Orlando, where he headed international public relations and publicity, and subsequently, worldwide marketing for four Sea World Enterprise theme parks and attractions. After 11 years with Sea World, he ran the Orlando office of the Partridge Group, a DC-based consulting firm, marketing the first direct international flights into the Orlando International Airport. Later, he was appointed president and CEO of the Ft Lauderdale/Broward County Florida Convention and Visitors Bureau, where he worked for five years during the late '80s and '90s, successfully repositioning the Southeast Florida tourism and convention industry away from Spring Break to a world-class tourism and convention destination. Subsequently, Richard held positions as vice president of international marketing for a South Florida-based cruise line, vice president and head of the travel and tourism division of Hill & Knowland in New York City, and head of Hill & Knowland's Ft. Lauderdale office; and finally, head of Florida marketing and sales for AMTRAK-during which time he was recognized for his marketing and sales acumen with the prestigious President's Award by AMTRAK. Richard also received the Outstanding Alumnus Award in the field of communications from his alma mater, Florida Southern College in Lakeland.
Richard's volunteer efforts included serving as a board member of the Florida Southern National Alumni Association, as well as coaching the Collier County Special Olympics basketball team that won the 2009-2010 Gold Medal State Championship. He was an active member of Naples First Presbyterian Church, where he assisted in the Outreach Christian Ministry Visitation and hospital programs, and served as a Stephen Minister and a deacon. In addition, since May of 2012, Richard had assisted more than 1500 patients, while serving as a volunteer chaplain for Hospital Management Corp/Physicians Regional Hospital in Naples.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Richard's memory to one of the following: Special Olympics Collier County; STEPHEN MINISTER Visitation and Hospital Ministry Programs at First Presbyterian Church (Downtown) Naples; Sharp Family Tourism and Education Building Development at Florida Southern College Lakeland, Fla.; Florida Southern College School of Communications; or the Chaplaincy Programs with Hospital Management Corp & Physicians Regional Hospital, Naples, Fla.

I miss you so much Dad. I miss your voice, your laugh, your hugs, your calls, your visits... The way you noticed and appreciated the things I do, your passion for your South Florida teams, your love for your grand kids, the way you dressed, your scent, your smile, your eyes, your manicured hands, your knobby knees. This year of "firsts" without you has been so hard. No matter how old we are, a girl always needs her Daddy. I love you.

I read The Miami Herald Obituaries with great sadness. I had the privilege of working with Dick when he was at Discovery Cruise Line. He was a great professional and I enjoyed our weekly meetings. He was always a gentleman and always very thoughtful. I am so sorry for your family's loss. He will be missed.

Melinda and Richard, Your dad was not only a great guy he was a great professional. His tenure at Sea World during the parks formative years made a terrific contribution to the company and community. I got to know your father on a more personal basis during several European missions. I am very appreciative of the contributions he made to my life.
