Alice Josephine Akehurst, 91, of Severna Park, Maryland, went home to heaven on Friday, August 26, 2011 peacefully in her sleep at the home. Her family and friends are rejoicing in the knowledge that she is now wrapped tightly in the loving arms of Jesus.
She was born in Baltimore City on March 8, 1920, and was the oldest of five sisters.
Alice earned her diploma from Eastern High School in 1938. Alice graduated from the West Baltimore General Hospital School of Nursing and earned the title of Registered Nurse after passing the Maryland State Board in 1943. She completed post graduate work at the Children's Hospital in Washing D.C. in 1944; received a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1966.
Alice enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be missed by all for her gracious, gentle, loving manner. She cared for others and was quick to offer what she had so no one was without. Alice loved to read, walk, crochet and sew. She was very crafty. She also loved to garden and planted one wherever she lived. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and volunteered her time in the Lucky Penny Thrift Store to help raise funds to support the church's numerous community projects.
In death, Alice will be reunited with her parents, Louise and Edgar Akehurst, and sisters, Anna Genevieve "Gen" Chalkley, Emily Louise Bengermino, and Ida Mason Schindler Hardester.
She is survived by her sister, Louise F. Jenkins, nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, and great -great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends in the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc. 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093 on Saturday, September 10 from 11 to 12pm at which time a funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home at 12pm. In lieu of flowers contributions may be directed in Mrs. Akehurst's name to University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation School of Nursing, 655 W. Lombart St., 2nd Floor, W-209, Baltimore, MD 21201 or to Epworth United Methodist Church, 600 Warren Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030. Interment Moreland Memorial Park Cemetery.
