FERREIRA, ALVARO PAIVA April 16, 1937 to December 28, 2012 Alvaro was born in Paul do Mar, Madeira, Portugal. His family immigrated to San Diego on July 5, 1952. They traveled by boat to New York City then by train to San Diego where they were re-united with their father and oldest brother. Alvaro was asked at the age of 17 to help support his family and he did so by working as a commercial tuna fisherman. He worked in the tuna industry for 30 years reaching such heights as Captain and Boat owner. Alvaro married his childhood sweetheart Pulqueria Franca in 1960. He instilled obtaining a good education to his children and his grandchildren. Alvaro was a pillar to his family and his Portuguese community. He served as President of Festa do Santo Amaro Inc. and was very active in the Point Loma Portuguese Community. Although he was proud of his Portuguese heritage and culture, he loved America and was grateful for all the opportunities this great country offered him. Family was the most important part of Alvaro's life, as coming from a family of 2 brothers and 5 sisters he knew the importance of keeping everyone together and the strength in family traditions. Alvaro loved spending time with family and friends, singing Portuguese songs, playing cards, telling jokes and traveling the world. His favorite spot was Hawaii which he traveled frequently with family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Pulqueria, his 4 children Tino, Pedro (Gina), Michelle Springer (Jack), Sarita Johnston (Steve) and 9 grandchildren Ryan, Grant, Collin, Rachel, Roman, Sierra, Hayden, Noah and Austin. We will be celebrating Alvaro's life with a Visitation/ Rosary at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., from 6 p.m. tp 8 p.m. on Friday, January 4th. On Saturday, January 5th, the Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1140 Evergreen St. at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
