Alvin Marion Stone, 94, went home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 28, 2014. He was born April 6, 1919 in Nashville, Tennessee, to Homer E. Stone Sr. and Lavena Crouch. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am at First Baptist Church, Montgomery, Texas, on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, with visitation from 5-7 pm, Monday, March 31, 2014, at Metcalf Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas. After moving to Grand Prairie, Texas from Nashville at the age of 3, A.M., as he liked to be called, and his family then moved to Dallas, where he attended public school. While attending Hillcrest Baptist Church as a teenager, he met his future wife, Margaret Ann Risinger. They married on June 26, 1943. Accepting the call of his Heavenly Father on his life, he went to Howard Payne University in Brownwood Texas, to begin preparations to enter the ministry. His studies were temporarily set aside while he served in the United States Army during World War II, entering on December 26, 1942, and was discharged February 12, 1946.
After completing his bachelor’s degree at Howard Payne, A.M. attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, graduating in 1948. His first full-time pastorate was Victory Baptist Church in Comanche, Texas. He served for 58 years as pastor of Texas Southern Baptist churches in Dallas, Corsicana, Waco, Houston and Shiro. After retiring from the pastorate in 2004, he and Margaret moved to Montgomery to be close to their daughter and her family. They joined First Baptist Montgomery, where A.M. taught Sunday School until two months prior to his death. Alvin was preceded in death by three of his children—daughter Sherrie Ann, and sons Stephen Alvin, and Baby Stone—and his son-in-law Bill Scroggins. He is survived by his wife Margaret of 70 years, daughter Janie Sue Scroggins, grandsons Cory and Cody Scroggins, son-in-law Jack Kennon, and daughter-in-law Susan Ganther.
He will be remembered by a host of family and friends as a godly, loving, wise and compassionate man who loved his Lord and faithfully served Him all of his years.
