"Andy" (Age 89)
On Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Arlington, VA. He was born in Ely, MN and moved to the Washington DC area in his 20's, living in Arlington and Springfield, VA.
Dear husband for 57 years of the late Aune Kangas Luhtanen; devoted companion of Ms. Terry Schultze; father of Mark and Eric Luhtanen, and uncle to many loved Luhtanen and Kangas nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Andrew's name to the Alzheimer's Association, which Andy supported in memory of Aune Luhtanen.
Andrew served in the Marine Corps (Expeditionary Troops Third Fleet) during World War II (Peleliu), and the Army Reserve. He earned his BS in Foreign Affairs from George Washington University in 1955. His 35-year U.S. Federal Government career in purchasing contract management included positions at the Panama Canal Agency, Postal Service, National Security Agency (NSA), Department of Commerce, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), followed by his work at the Joint Oceanographic Institutions.
He was a member of several organizations including St. Mark's Lutheran Church (Springfield), University of Maryland Terrapin Club, George Washington University Athletic Directors Club, and the Masons (Cherrydale Lodge#42). As a strong supporter of his Finnish heritage, he was a member of the Finlandia Foundation and Knights of Kaleva, and regularly attended Finnish Embassy events, Finnfests, and events in his hometown of Ely.
Arrangements have been made for a Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 2 at 11:00 am, with a visitation the evening before on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 6 pm to 8 pm, both in Springfield, VA at Demaine Funeral Home.
