Augustine Avila was born August 31, 1924 in Lucia, CA and passed on May 17,2010, after a lengthy illness in Placerville, CA. Alongtime resident of Fairplay and El Dorado County for 59 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mercy; his five children, daughters Barbara Martinez of Sacramento and Susan Stinson of Fairplay, CA, his sons Leonard Avila of Fairplay, CA. Ted Avila of Omo Ranch and Steve Avila of Palm Springs: seven grand children, eight great grand children, one great great grandchild; sisters Ellen lobsien of Orland, CA. and Lucia O'Quinn of Las Vegas, brother Daniel Avila of Corning,CA. , sister-in law Theresa Avila of Ione, CA and numerous nieces and nephews. Born one of sixteen children, his early childhood days were spent living in Monterey County where he worked for Randolph Hearst. He attended the Avila Family School in Lucia, until attending high school in King City, CA. He joined the Navy and was honorably discharged after losing three brothers in the war, prior to meeting his wife.
In 1947, he met the love of his life, Mercy Lopez, in Jolon ,CA. They married, November 20, 1948 in Holister CA ,before moving to Jackson, CA. and then to Fairplay, CA. in 1951, remaining in Fairplay.
Augustine was a devoted husband and father and was a very special person, never meeting a stranger. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoying gold panning, gambling and traveling. He was a member of the Oro Madre Moose Lodge, and a Elder member of the Xolon SaliananTribal Council(People of the Oaks).
A visitation and Rosary will take place at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Placerville, CA. on May 25th from 10 to 11 a.m. A Rosary service and funeral mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Fairplay Cemetery, Fairplay, CA.
