Born in Cumberland, British Columbia, Canada, Joyce, a registered nurse, grew up in the same neighborhood as her future husband, Don. It wasn't until later in life when they met again as young medical professionals that their friendship blossomed into romance. They were married in 1959. Don and Joyce lived in various parts of Canada before moving to Salt Lake City in 1976. Joyce enjoyed swimming, skiing, bowling and her children's school activities while working as a nurse in assisted living facilities in the Salt Lake Valley. Don and Joyce were happily married for almost 35 years and often took trips to explore the world. After Don's death in 1994, Joyce continued traveling on her own and enjoyed participating in the lives of her seven grandchildren.
