B. J. Adams, Joe, known to his children and grandchildren as "Papa Joe" died peacefully in his home, Thursday, December 19, 2013. He was 87 years old.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2013 at Memory Hill Cemetery with The Rev. Dr. Joe Johnson officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the
or the Dothan Humane Society.
Mr. Adams was born January 11, 1926 in Dothan, Alabama. He served in World War II on the island of Guam in the South Pacific and was a crew member on a B29 Bomber. He worked in Dothan and went into business with his family as an Anheuser-Busch wholesaler in 1950. Joe loved to play golf and fish. After retiring he and his wife Barbara of 47 years enjoyed traveling in their RV with their beloved dogs, Tuff and Hercules who were always along for the ride. He was a member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church, the Elks Club, and the VFW Club.
He is preceded in death by his father, W. J. Adams, his wonderful mother, Bessie Adams; his sister, Dorothy Baldwin.
Papa Joe is survived by the ones he loved and the ones who loved him so dearly. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Adams; his son, Bill Adams (Carmen); his daughter, Sydney Adams Powell; his stepdaughter, Shea Mendheim; Mary Adams; his grandchildren, Clay Adams (Amy), Amy Adams Mullin (Philip), Kimberly Still, Dr. Adam Powell, Dr. Austin Powell (Kari), Abbey Powell Dunn (Clark), Cliff Mendheim (Helen), Harris Mendheim (Bay), his 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including Dr. Charles Bush (Patricia), Harriet Bush and Nancy Jo Kopko (Steve).
The family would like to extend their appreciation to his caregivers, Mary Jones, Beverly Severson, Vanessa Williams, Rosie Freeman and Judy Youngblood. A special thank you also to the nurses and staff of Covenant Hospice for their loving care of Mr. Adams.
